Is it possible to stop my Venue sq from dimming when an app is running?

The backlight on my Venue SQ goes off when running an app which makes it impossible to see (eg useless) when outside (and without having a free hand). I have set to “always on” in settings. Is there a work-around for this?

It is not possible to stop the device display from dimming after 15 seconds when the device is in AOD mode, regardless of whether in general use mode or during activity.

Setting the Display on My AMOLED Watch to Always On covers the Always on display option.
