My Venu Sq has stopped charging

I had been in Spain for five days when the Garmin stopped taking any charge.

The only differences between its normal operation, were a) the ambient temperature (+10'C) and b) I had sunscreen applied to myself.

Any ideas why it suddenly stopped taking any charge on-board?

Try cleaning the contacts on the watch and the charging cable - Cleaning the Charging Contacts on a Garmin Watch | Venu® Sq 2 | Garmin Customer Support
Try a different Garmin cable and power source.
If nothing works, I recommend reaching out to Product Support through their website at https://support.garmin.com.
