Bad GPS and Heart Rate

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine recently got a brand new Venu 4 45mm and was excited to test it out. Today he went on his first run with it, alongside another person wearing a Venu 4 41mm.

We have been trying to figure out what is going on with his data and GPS. I understand it is his first run, but I have tested several Garmins recently (friends getting new watches) including Forerunner 970s, Venu 4s, Vivoactive 6s, older Forerunner 165s and they have generally worked fine straight out of the box.

The first issue we noticed was heart rate. The watch showed an average of 120bpm, which is unusually low for this pace. His heart rate on previous runs and other watches has been around 145 to 150bpm.

The second issue is with GPS. We compared it to the other friend running with a Venu 4 41mm and the 45mm was off at the start, then seemed to improve which I could have expected if the watch is still calibrating. But toward the end of the run, it had issues again and even showed him finishing somewhere else entirely. After about 5 km, I would expect the GPS to be fully locked in. This was in a suburban area with no tall buildings, trees, or other obvious signal interference.

I have attached an image below from the Venu 4 45mm and Venu 4 41mm. Both watches were set to Auto Select GPS mode.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? Before assuming the watch faulty, my friend plans to do another run to test. But the combination of inaccurate heart rate and GPS is concerning.

  • I haven't had any problems with GPS, though sometimes the heart rate gets "stuck" and takes a few minutes to catch up. I've had that issue on other Garmin Venu watches, so I'm assuming it my wrist, not the watches.

I suggest contacting support as it sounds like a faulty unit. Maybe try a hard reset first (press and hold the top button until the watch turns off).
