15.05 fault : watch volume control no longer working

Hi, I'd like to report a fault with my Venu 3 that has started immediately after being upgraded to 15.05 firmware.

Symptoms:

  • Going into the volume control area when playing on-device music (MP3 files) shows max volume, when normally this would show the volume of the connected headphones
  • Neither the 'up' or 'down' areas of the touchscreen have any function, when normally touching the respective half of the screen would raise/lower volume

In terms of resolution attempts, I have:

  • powered off and restarted the Venu 3 twice
  • tried both earbuds and headphones
  • unpaired and re-paired my headphones
  • unpaired and re-paired my headphones
  • removed all known bluetooth devices from the Venu 3
  • done multiple power-offs as well as the 'reset' process on my earbuds, and turned my headphones on and off

Workaround:

I am able to control volume via the earbuds and headphone hardware control (not ideal as I need to remember each device's specific control paradigms).

Questions:

  1. Is this a known issue with a planned resolution date, or is there something I can do to resolve?
  2. How can I downgrade my watch's firmware to the previous working version?
  3. How can I prevent my Venu 3 from automatically upgrading in future either through an official process, or unofficial hacks? (If the current firmware does what I need, then the only thing a new firmware can do is make my experience the same or worse, so to me the risk assessment says I should stay on the same firmware until I discover a feature that doesn't work for me.)
  • I don't have a solution, but chiming in to say I have the same problem with this software version in a Vivoactive 5.  There are also a number of similar complaints across different models (e.g. Fenix 7, Enduro 2) over the past ~3 months on Reddit.  I can't control the volume level on my Airpods, so it's effectively rendered the music features of my watch unusable.

  • Thank you for chiming in, that's good (and worrying) info. I did do a number of searches before submitting this query/bug report and didn't see much recent, but I didn't consider it may have been introduced as far back as 15.00 and still be unresolved. Eeeek.

Other info from my Venu 3 to compare against yours...

    • API Level 5.2.0
  • I'm having the same issue with my podcast app (playrun), except that the buttons actually work, it's just the display that is stuck to "maximum volume".

    SW version 15.05

  • The same problem here on wireless earbuds connected directly to Venu 3. After update from FW 14.15 to 15.05 I can't control volume (also blue bar showing/representing volume level is not changing/decreasing/increasing, just stuck on max volume). Also time control doesn't work at all, if you want to jump for eg. 30 sec of the song using move forward button then when you release control button the song starts from the begining, not from 30 sec.

On FW 14.15 all was working fine.

    Please fix it ASAP.

  • Yeah have the same SW version and ANT/BLE/BT versions (my understanding is Vivoactive and Venu are relatively similar in software profile).  I think this is probably something related to Bluetooth volume control in the Android system itself (but that's just a guess from reading other forums).  Hopefully someone from Garmin can take a look at this soon.

  • Hello all,

We have other reports of this and are actively investigating.  When we know more or have any updates to share, I'll be posting to this thread.  Thank you in advance for your patience with us while we conduct this investigation.

  • Thank you very much, . Any chance you could also find out if there are plans to let us opt-out of auto-updates, i.e. make updates opt-in instead of automatic, please?

This would help reduce the impact of issues like this, especially since Garmin's suite of regression tests for new firmware does not appear to be complete. These are expensive and high-end devices, so to have buggy firmware deployed that removes core functionality feels like a major issue that needs some risk mitigation. (I'm a software product owner for a large bank, so I'm very aware of the dangers of deploying public-facing apps.)

A further mitigant would be to allow firmware downgrades to earlier versions, either on user request, or Garmin's if you're able to push specific firmware to specific devices, so perhaps this feature is on your backlog also?

  • Hi Tracy,

Thanks for looking into this!  Let us know if there’s any more relevant information we can provide.

  • I will submit a request on your behalf. I also recommend you visit Garmin Ideas to submit this as an idea. I would make sure to include not just the "what" but the "why". This change has been made on some devices, so there is a possibility that a change will be made if enough requests are seen.
