Garmin tech support reminded me that the top button has more than one function depending upon "short press" or "long press". Many thanks. Problem solved. Several perusals of the manual and I did not get this. Short press allows access to APPS. I suppose, there is some user interface decision that goes into putting access here rather than under heart rate, but, there you go.
