14.15 update broke my golf - Venu 3 will no longer open my Golf course

Summer is here so we are back to our summer golf course. Last year I was happily using my Venu 3 to play this version of the course.

The update to 14.10 happened just before the course change over, and the problem continues in 14.15.

The norm is to press button A to open the choices, select Golf, allow the watch to find the GPS satellites, and select the course to play. The Venu 3 then downloads the course. Pressing button A should then open the course, make me select Mens or Ladies even though it is ALWAYS the same (do they think I change sex from time to time?), and show the first hole.

It doesn't. Instead of opening the course, it kicks me back to the Apps and Activities menu.  The watch will happily let me load and play the winter course but the holes are not all the same. So far it has happened many times whilst waiting to tee off and further attempts during recent rounds.

I've tried deleting the courses from both the Garmin Connect app and the Garmin Golf app on my phone, and reloading them. I've restarted the watch umpteen times. I was about to post and found that there was an update, so I've updated to 14.15 and it still doesn't work as it should. This evening I have tried many times. 4 failed, one actually loaded the course. But then I tried again many more times, and each failed.

Since 14.10, and now 14.15, the course has only twice (whilst at home) loaded and appeared ready to play - but it is not repeatable either at home or at the course.

Other local courses will download and open but clearly that is no use.

How can I get my watch to open Durham City Golf Club course?

Update 25th May : email reply from garmin support implying unknown issue and suggested check in Garmin Express for updates, and asked for pictures or a video. Sent.

Update 30 May: Support suggested reading g the manual on how to download a course using garmin connect. I was rather upset that the agent clearly hadn't read this forum thread where I stated I'd done this.

Whenever I get time to phone, their phone lines are closed sos I will try to make time on Monday to ring.

  • I also have the same issue, when I go to load the course after the gps locates it, it will take me back to select the course again or I get an error message saying the Garmin Golf app must be loaded. This all seemed to have started after the latest Garmin Connect Update and or the recent Venu 3 software update. The only way I’ve been able to fix this is to turn off the power on the watch and then repower it. In addition to this issue and at the same time with all the updates I am also experiencing the auto shot detection not working on the watch. I’ve been told the autoshot detection issue is a known problem now though I’ve been asked to send videos of me striking the golf ball, they want to ensure that I’m wearing the watch on my lead hand and to confirm the autoshot detection banner is not present, I’ve been using this watch the past golf season with no issue until now.

  • I am having the same problem exactly as described.

I have been able to get it to work two separate times by deleting the course and redownloading but but it only works once without having to reset everything. Unfortunately, it never seems to work when I am at the course.

  • The strangest thing happened yesterday. I played golf at my troublesome course using my Venu 3.

I'd almost given up on it. I've certainly lost count of how many times I've removed and re downloaded the course in garmin connect and garmin golf, restarted the watch, had to open garmin golf on my phone, reloaded the course, attempted to open it and used inappropriate language when it kicked me back to the activity selection screen.

Meanwhile my friend with his basic obsolete Approach S10 smiled and just opens the course. But he doesn't run or swim.

  • I have the same issues with opening golf courses.

But, in addition to this the hazards and layup functions are broken after the update. If and when I get my course to open (turn off and on watch), it is not possible to get distances to hazards and layups. The option "Hazards"/"Layups" is just grey text. Anyone else have this problem in as well?

  • Today hazards were greyed out but layups were OK. On Monday they'd both been available to view. This evening the course won't even open.

  • I have the same issue. Tried software updates, but nothing has worked.

  • I have the same issue. The Venu 3 successfully downloads my local course and blinks 'ready' next to the top button, but pressing the button just takes me back to the Apps and Activities menu. This has only happened since the software upgrade to 14.15, so clearly an issue with that.

  • I have the same issue, venu 3 is barely a month old. DId all the updates, now it not tracking my shots. And at times it won't load the golf it just jump back to fitness option. When is Garmin going to release an update to fix this issue? Not happy went from VA4 that works perfect with the golf to Venu 3 which technically should have more features not even working!

  • I haven't ever been able to get the golf activity to work.

  • I have the same problem. During use on the course when I click the top button, “Hazards” is disabled and it only tracks shots on only a few holes
