Is Garmin really this bad at the basics? Or do I have a faulty one?

I just got a Venu 3s after having Fitbits for a while. I knew there would be some growing pains switching, but man, I didn't think I'd have to worry about the basics and some quality-of-life settings missing! Maybe mine is faulty??

Biggest Issue: It's not counting ANY distance doing Indoor Walk (on a walking pad). I keep this thing in my pocket when walking.

At first, it wasn't counting steps or distance. If I was vigorously swinging my arms with it on my wrist or had it in my non-dominant side's pocket it might eventually pick up a few steps (3-15) and 0.3 meters after 10-15~ mintues, but when I tried strapping it to my ankle (most common suggestion), steps and distance would remain at ZERO the entire time. Absolutely nothing picked up, except it never fails to have a heart rate reading, even when it's in my pocket.

I finally figured out it will count steps when in the pocket of my dominant side (with Fitbit I always kept it on the non-dominant side and both are set to that). So now it's counting my steps, but the distance is still staying 0. Isn't it supposed to calculate this with the accelerometer, like most every other pedometer out there? I've looked through Reddit and the forum, see that a few people have brought this issue up (and the ones below), and tried the scarce solutions I did see (like copying regular walk and turning off GPS, strapping to ankle, using Treadmill activity, data recording every second, etc.), but no change. Having to manually add the distance later in the app is not an acceptable solution at this price point. It seems to work as expected when walking outside (but with GPS).

Other issues:
- It Isn’t counting floors well. It misses most of the times I head up a flight of stairs. I won't say Fitbit was perfect, but it was capturing them at a higher rate.

- SmartThings isn’t available for the device that’s touted as the most ‘smart watch-like’. It's available for what seems like every other model, though.

- Can’t switch the orientation of the watch face unless I change the wrist setting, which my understanding is that would make the data less accurate, but it’s already inaccurate, I guess lol. I just want the buttons on the other side of the watch - other models have the ability to do this.

- In Garmin Connect, I can’t have distance in metric and weight in lbs, it’s either all metric or all imperial. I've seen others bring this up, too. Us quirky Canadians always getting the short end of the stick lol.

I really love the look of this watch and its other features, so if anyone has ideas on how to fix the distance issue at the very least, I would so appreciate it!

  • Regarding your indoor walks: it sounds fancy to use a wristwatch as a pocket watch or ankle watch. However, there is a hint in the manual:

Coming to the orientation of the watch face: indeed, this would be appreciated.

  • - If you are using a walking pad I would recommend the Treadmill activity option and Calibrate the Treadmill Distance

    - Floors climbed - I would review The floors climbed amount does not seem accurate as there are some requirements for how it counts

    - Smart things - No argument here. At this time the folks at SmartThings have not chosen to make an app for Garmin Connect IQ

    - Units of Measure - In Garmin Connect I am able to go to Settings > Garmin Devices > Venu 3 > System > Format > Units and change them individually

    - Orientation - You are correct, there are activities where the wrist choice impacts the devices recognition of certain movements

  • Yes, I've walked outside a few times but I guess it still hasn't calibrated at all in that case lol. I will try using the treadmill activity to get it to calibrate better for my indoor walking.

  • - Thank you, I will use the Treadmill activity to get it to calibrate and hope that works!

    - I have reviewed that page for Floors Climbed earlier, the barometer holes are totally clear, I don't use a handrail, and it's not windy in my house lol. Today it's missing about 1/4 of the floors I've climbed, which I think is a slight improvement over previous days, so I'll continue to keep my eye on it.

    - But there is a SmartThings app in Garmin Connect IQ? https://apps.garmin.com/apps/dbc89b4c-cc82-480d-ae0e-58614272fecc?tid=0
It's not available for the Venu 3 series but other Venus are listed in the compatibility list.

    - Yes, I have the unit of measure settings in the watch set how I like. The problem is that those settings do not override the unit of measure in the Garmin Connect app when I look at my weight/height or distance for activities. If I want to see my distance in kms, I have to have my User Settings set to Metric, which then makes my height and weight metric as well. If I set it to Statute, my height and weight show in feet and lbs, but then the distance in my activities only shows in miles, even if I try to edit them and change to kms. It will save but still only shows in miles.

This isn't the biggest deal on its own, but I really can't remember another time I've run into something like this. And coupled with the other issues and ones I haven't included, it's disappointing.

    - What's the deciding factor on which Garmin models that have the ability to change the watch face orientation without changing wrist placement setting? Can this ability be expected to come to the Venu 3 series?

    Thank you for your time!

  • - Face orientation - I don't know that there is a good answer for a deciding factor. Their are gains and losses both ways. I would recommend submitting your request at Garmin Ideas

    - Floors climbed -  Credit is given for a consecutive increase of 10 feet (3 meters) in elevation with a grade of 10% or higher while walking. If you pause on the stairs or the stair case isnt quite long enough there may be a lack of credit

    - Smart Things - Fair, I am not sure why the app was not updated to the current device of each series

    - Units of measure - I will make sure that gets passed along, I was able to reproduce it on my Venu 3

  • Thank you for the Garmin Ideas link and for passing along the units of measure issue! I made a few submissions to Garmin Ideas lol.

For the floors, at this point, I'm purposely walking up the stairs to see if the Venu is capturing them. I don't pause on the stairs, I don't pause at the top of the stairs. By the end of the day yesterday, it was missing roughly 2/3 of my floors climbed. This morning, it only captured 1/5. In the afternoon I was more distracted running around the house but noticed it counted 4 more floors, even though I thought I went up 2 or 3 times.

I don't have a tape measure to see how tall my stairs go, but the standard height for ceilings, in America at least, maybe also in Canada, seems to be 8-9ft. Ontario building code has the minimum at 2.1-2.3m. Now I'm wondering if that 10ft/3m threshold to get a floor credit is too high for people living in a standard home? But if my home has standard 8-9ft ceilings, then I would assume the Venu wouldn't count any floors in that case?
