Venu 3 HRV and Heart Rate Issue after Connecting to External HRM

My Garmin Venu 3 looses the ability to track HRV each time I do a training with an external heart rate sensor connecteted. Restart and soft reset doesn't help. The only way to get it running again is to reset to factory settings. And because there is no backup possibility I have to install several things manually each time wich is very annoying and time consuming.

Normally the HR measurement and also the HRV measurement (with the corresponding apps) work perfectly with the sensors on the wrist. However, as soon as I do a workout with an external heart rate monitor (in my case a Polar Verity Sense), I no longer have HRV afterwards. The heart rate measurement then only works sporadically and sometimes not at all. This is despite the LEDs flashing. Switching the heart rate measurement on and off at the wrist does not help either.

And why is there no way to make a complete backup? This is also possible with other Garmin watches!

regards, Mathias

PS: same Issue after the Update 11.16 from today!

  • I am having this same issue.  Garmin?

  • Third-party chest strap heart rate monitors may not provide HRV data. If a chest strap heart rate monitor is necessary for the HRV features you are using, we recommend using a Garmin heart rate monitor. HRV data is also not collected while an activity is in a paused or "Resume Later" state.

  • A Polar H10 can provide HRV data, so are you saying that this is not supported by the Venu 2+?  That would be disappointing.  I did not buy a Garmin HR sensor due to the lack of available stock and the need for analog compatible output for older treadmills.

The reason for use of the band is that HRV reading from the base Venu 2+ device appear to be invalid.  They are always too low, do not vary as expected, and don't at all match results from a variety of known-accurate chest straps. For that reason, Venu body battery and sleep scores also seem to be invalid.

I'm open to any suggestions, but at present the Venu isn't usable for HRV related functions.

  • I am saying that the Venu 2+ may not be capable of reading HRV input from 3rd party heart rate monitors. You can reference this article for more information -support.garmin.com/.../

  • I would have hoped that the specifics would be known for the H10, as that device is as standard as it gets.  Regardless, the included HRV based functions do not work on my solo Venu2+  and that's why i use a band,  And if I can't use the band either, then an awful lot of functionality in the device does not work.

This problem is reported here on occasion and I've never seen a fix recommended other than band tightness.  So I am not seeing much help for users with this issue.  Is the Venu 3 any better?

  • I moved to a Venu 3 a year ago specifically to get built-in (night time) HRV, and so far it's been quite accurate (falling down when getting sick for example). I also wear a Polar H10 during intensive workouts and have no subsequent HRV issues.

Although I have owned a Venu 2 before, I have never tried to use it to fetch HRV data from the Polar chest strap.

  • Too bad you don't have a comparison to the Venu 2.  I am sure HRV works fine there for many people, but it does not for me.  I am disappointed that an accurate external HR sensor can be connected but is then not used for important functions.

When you say "I have no subsequent issues", what does that mean?  Does it mean that your V3 is using the HR strap for HRV, or that it merely does not break the HRV measurement from the watch?

  • I mean that it does not break the HRV measurement from the watch. The Venu 3 does not use the strap for HRV. I wasn't even aware that it was possible for the watch to use HRV data from an external sensor.

Out of curiosity, which app for HRV are you using on Venu 2?

  • Using the bult in measurements of the device, such as the health snapshot.
