Accidentally discard after pausing activity

My wife is constantly losing activities when she pauses a run for instance at a crosswalk. The user interface makes it way too easy to discard by accidentally brushing the touchscreen. It's worse in the winter, but it just happened again after she paused a run, then reached in her pocket for a gel. When she pulled the gel out her watch had already discarded the activity.

This seems like an easy one to fix by burying the discard option or making it a button press option vs. a touchscreen option.

Anyone else have this issue??

  • One suggestion is to swipe right to get to the home screen while the activity is paused. That way reaching in a pocket won't delete the activity.

  • Good workaround! I’ll suggest it to her. Thanks.

  • Doesn't it come back automatically to workout after a minute?

Also, that leaves GPS on while paused which drains the battery.

Adding additional confirmation before discarding or saving would be best solution. Same was done for Fenix 7 after many people requested due to same problem.

  • Good point. I forgot about that, there is a confirmation. I wonder how her activity is getting discarded. You have to press a button to at the confirmation to discard it, a swipe won't do it.

  • This happens to me all the time as well. Often when I've paused an activity it's so I can remove/add a layer of clothing, which is enough to mess with the touchscreen and save the activity. Fortunately it has never deleted any of my activities but it could just as easily do so given save/delete are both just one touch screen button away.

  • I would recommend a couple of setting changes -

    1. Using Auto Pause - The device will automatically pause the activity (and resume) based on the settings provided. No swipes needed

    2. Using Auto Lock - A little more cumbersome, but it will require a 2 second touch on the display to unlock the screen. Should help limit accidental swipes

  • Thank you for the tips. But these are just workarounds and/or require additional and unnecessary interaction with the watch which I believe no one wants to commonly use just because of a seemingly bad design choice.

Also, this issue of accidentally saving or discarding a paused activity seems to frustrate so many people (including me, of course). So dear Garmin, could you please give users the option (and maybe even make it the default) to save or discard an activity only after a LONG-PRESS of the top button? I believe this would be the only real, yet simple solution to this problem. You already have this for paused (pool) swimming activity, so I don't see why it would be such a big deal to implement this also for other activities.

  • I know this doesn't help Venu 3 users, but FYI, it's taken care of on the Venu 4. You have to press the top button to confirm discarding an activity (surely they can implement that in an update to the 3). And you can pause an activity and resume it as a sure fire method of not discarding it.

  • Hi Scott, maybe we don't understand each other, but with Venu 3, you also "have to press the top button to confirm the discarding an activity". Something like long pressing (holding) a button is not supported, at least according to the Owner's Manual for Venu 4. So unfortunately, there was no change in this regard and users still can discard an activity accidentally instead of resuming it.

And regarding the Save function, it seems like there is no change either, i.e. just touching the display button saves the paused activity.

  • I looked at my Venu 3 and think I see now. You have to tap the on-screen delete button, then the top physical button, to delete an activity. If your sleeve, or a brush against the watch, tapped the on-screen delete button you can delete when you think you're, resuming.

The Venu 4 eliminates this possibility because the delete button isn't on the screen when you pause an activity. You have to scroll down to see the it. Only save and resume are on the screen. I suppose you could still save by mistake, but you'd need two button taps to do it. And that's better than deleting by mistake.

Regarding save, the Venu 4 has a confirmation dialog for saving so you'd need an extra screen tap to save.
