How to tell if heart rate sensor is working properly?

I have seen the FAQ article: The Heart Rate Sensor on My Garmin Watch Is Not Accurate. My situation looks similar to the run cadence tracking issue shown in that article, but the rates do not match like that case. In my case, the heart rate goes from around 136 bpm to 168 bpm in about 10 seconds and then varies from there like I would expect as my run progressed. Meanwhile, my run cadence stayed pretty close to the 154 spm average throughout. Here is a screenshot of the heart rate overlayed with pace and cadence:

Other than buying a chest strap HRM, is there a way to tell what's really going on? The watch was quite snug, but not overly tight, and the outside temperature was around 50 deg. F. The most concerning thing is that my Venu 3S adjusted the Maximum Heart Rate setting up to 178 bpm based on this run, but it doesn't look reliable. I am 62 yrs old, so I expect my HRMax to be somewhere around 158 - 164 bpm (or perhaps a bit higher from having played tennis for many years before I got out of shape). It has shown similar offsets in several previous runs, sometimes even with a step back down later in the run.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Ron

  • Update: I had to have the previous watch replaced due to water damage from leaky seals, but the new unit still has similar jumps in heart rate (HR). Here is the first run with the new watch:

The jump size is still around 40 BPM. I'm wondering if the heart rate measurement algorithm is affected by signal mixing between HR and the breathing rate (BR), and the result jumps from HR-BR to HR+BR for some reason (in this case it jumped almost as soon as I switched from running to walking because I was out of breath). If so, maybe the actual HR for my run was slowly increasing around 140 BPM, which seems a little more likely to me than either 120 or 160.

Any thoughts from Garmin engineers? Thanks,

    Ron

  • Mine has been replaced too. Did U use it for swimming or something. Im afraid this is a problem with Venu 3

  • No swimming, just showering. Even though tech support told me explicitly that the watch can be worn in the shower, I am still a little reluctant to try again. I want to wait until I get a solid idea of the baseline performance of the watch without exposure to water (except rinsing it and drying it after sweating) before I try showering with this one. I think it is a great watch, but I definitely wanted to not have to take it off to shower (or swim, for that matter) - that was part of the reason for choosing it. Hopefully, it was just a bad batch of seals, or something like that, which has really been fixed. I will test it out in a week or two, I guess.

  • Many users of Fenix 7 and Epix watches had their watches die or buttons fail after swimming or surfing. It seems that Garmin has not improved in this regard since even newer Venu 3 and Fenix 7 Pro / Epix Pro have same problems.

  • It seems that its not completely water proof wich is ridicously.

    Thanks for you answer
