Venu2s having sudden battery drain and shutdown after firmware update

I have a Venu2s that is a alittle over 2 years old. It has had AMAZING battery life the whole time, I have consistently gotten 4 days on a full charge (and i wear it 24/7, with daily walks and/or swim and/or bike and/or hikes) and on the rare occasion I would let it get below 20% without charging, it would decrease from 20% to 10% and lower VERY slowly.  No surprises. I would notice it was great about holding a charge even down to 10% and lower till i could get home and charge it. I never had any sudden watch turnoffs.

Well, a week or two ago I let the watch do an automatic firmware update, and since then, THREE TIMES i have gone out with the watch at 20-27% (which i never used to think twice ago as I would EASILY make it home) and suddenly had it go dead within the hour.

Progress!  Thanks a lot Garmin!  I shouldn't allow automatic updates—so often they are NOT improvements (with any company or product)..

There are other threads reporting such behavior, but they're 2 years old and they don't allow posts any more. This is a firmware update that happened recently (I think there have been two in succession, actually), and I wonder if anyone else has experienced anything similar with this specific one, and what to do, it's really a bummer because three times now I've gone out for an hour walk with a charge of (realized it was low and not time to charge before i leave, but NEVER was an issue before) and  ended up with a dead watch before my activity is over.

Another mysterious note: "ABOUT" o the watch says I have software 19.05, but that was released in May 2024 apparently. And it is the most recent. But i NOW that just yesterday i saw that message saying my watch was going to update automatically in x seconds if I didn't stop it, and i let it do it. Also a couple weeks ago.

  • I'm having this exact issue. Battery drain increased exponentially after the update in general. For example, I fully charged my watch until 11PM yesterday and was down to 75% at 11AM this morning.

  • Im having same issue since 2 weeks ago, there were some update of something and cant even do a 20 min running with battery at 50%...

I have tried factory reset and no solution...

    Anyway to revert the update?

  • Same thing on my Fenix E. I updated about 4 days ago and since then battery drains 30-40% per day where is was 10-20% per day. Hoping for a quick fix as this is rather annoying.

  • I'm having the same issue too! My battery life could easily last a week if I was conservative with it and now I'm barely getting to 3 days if I'm lucky. Where it used to drain only a few percent during sleep it now drains about 25% as well! I had the automatic update pop up about 2 weeks ago and have had the issue since then. Have tried everything people have suggested in other posts with no help, very disappointed to be honest.

  • I'm having the exact same issue has anybody found any solutions yet??

  • I spoke to Garmin Support and theyre sending me a replacement as mine was within warranty still. If it's not sorted with a whole new device when it gets here then it has to be the software and I guess we just wait till they fix it in the next update.

  • I just emailed support yesterday it's been since like 2022 when I bought mine I hope they're feeling generous lol

  • They are gonna offer you a venu 3s for like 360€

  • So I talked to garmin support about a week ago and after explaining everything, he put me on hold for a few minutes, came back and said they were going to send me a replacement brand-new Venu2S. I have to put a deposit of 140 till the old watch is back i n their hands then I get refunded.  This was a decent solution considering the watch was well out of warranty – it's only a one-year warranty on this watch and I am at two years and four months.  But it also tells me that they know something is up with this update or whatever they did, because clearly others are having the issue and it sounds like they offered at least one other person on this thread a replacement. Interesting that it's on multiple models of watches.

Thought I would share one other observation as this continues to happen to me, two observations actually. One is that it consistently happens specifically at 27%.   I saw my watch was exactly 27% this morning and went out for a walk and sure enough a few mins into the walk it died. I have seen that number at least twice before when this happened.

The second thing I didnt mention before, but is highly relevant,  is a very distinct and different behavior from normal battery dying. When the watch sudddenly turns off, and I plug it back in to charge, when it comes back on, the activity is still going from whatever point it stopped at. (This morning that was 27 mins...after being at 27%...what?)

In other words, it's not that it drained, dropped to one percent and died. It's still at 27% when I plug it back in and not only that, the walk or whatever activity is still running as soon as I plug it back in and I have to stop it. That's NOT really the battery dying ....that's something else. My experience with the battery dying—which was exceedingly rare before this (as at 10% i would get a low batt warning and be asked if I wanted to turn on battery saver and I would...at which point it would STILL last really long!)—is that it would actually get down to one percent and then turn off ....and when I plugged it in there would be a little dead battery icon and then it would start charging back up from one percent.

So the  battery is NOT actually dead, not even nearly dead, when this shutoff happens; it's just below a certain threshold, perhaps even an exact threshold.

When Amazon recently brought the Venu 3s down to 350 from 450 I considered upgrading for a nanosecond, but honestly the Venu 2s more than meets my needs and there's hundreds of other things I'd rather do with that kinda cash right now.  It just needs to work!

If this is happening to you I highly recommend calling Garmin and reporting the same issue and you're like me to get an offer of a new watch. Maybe if they have to replace enough watches they'll patch this.!

  • I just did my exchange order and did notice that the replacement watch is "recertified." UGH.
