Venu 2 battery drain

I have been using my Garmin Venu 2 for almost one and a half year now. I really much like this watch and the battery duration is really good...  in general.

Typically, it will only discharge between 10 and 15% per day, which would mean between 7 and 10 days between recharges.... but.

Every now and then, the battery power will be drained unexpectedly. If I'm lucky I notice during the day the charge drops from say 70 to 20%. Then I restart the watch and charge it again. Afterwards, discharge rate is back to normal. However, when the battery drops from 50% to 0 during the night, which happened a few times as well, it is less convenient as I also use the watch as alarm to wake up.

I already have the habit to charge the battery when it is around 50%, just to have some margin.

I would really love to hear whether there is a solution for these unexpected power drains, because that would tremendously increase my trust in this device.

BTW. Yes, I read other threads on the same topics, but unfortunately did not see any convincing answers. I already tried uninstalling all IQ apps etc. Even with the latest firmware (17.04) this still happens.

  • The best answer that can be given is to contact technical service and they will change it for you. The same thing happened to me and I have another one.

  • I have the same issue, it has been happening to my Venu 2S too, it's less than 6 months old. Both with 16.10 and 17.04 too. For example I changed it to 100% on Friday afternoon and on Sunday night it was completely empty with two short walks only (automatically detected).

  • I suggest resetting the watch, and then not installing any third party faces, etc.

If that fails for you, then you probably have a lemon like me. When I hit 30% I have to charge my watch, because it goes from 30% to 0 in a matter of minutes. My watch is 2y old.

Unfortunately because I got my watch from Amazon, and I'm in Africa, contacting Garmin isn't an ideal solution for me - as I'd probably end up paying a hefty repair bill. The local distributor is not known for being as friendly and willing to hand out freebee replacements here. And of course, the typical "turn all these things off" in the battery saving guides the Garmin reps like to mention is of no use to me either.

  • I have a simliar problem which coincided with a software update. The battery drain is normal until the watch shows 40% when it turns off with zero battery. Plug the watch into the charger and when it turns on after about 1 minute battery is 40%. Unplug charger and the watch turns off with zero battery.

I suspect this is a software issue because yesterday I went for a 2 hour bike ride. At the start battery was 41% when I set it to an activity (bike). I expected it to last a few minutes but I checked avery 10 minutes or so and the watch was still working. When I stopped the activity 2 hours later it immediately turned off. After a few minutes on charge the watch showed 40% battery and it was asking me to save the activity.

If anyone has ideas I would appreciate a reply. But please don't suggest contacting Garmin service because I live in Thailand and that is a waste of time.

  • I'm in Cambodia and it seems like suggesting contacting Garmin service has the same problem. And I don't know how to solve the problem without help.bubble shooter

  • My watch has now stopped completely with battery showing 100% when plugged in. It's a waste of time contacting Garmin because they are not interested. This is not a small issue and I suspect a large number of users have the same problem. Fixing it will cost Garmin a lot of money so they will do nothing and hope that customers will buy a new watch. Just look at the fiasco with the Index2 scale. The solution was not to fix the issue but instead let users put in their own values. Pointlees or what!

This attitude is prevelent in many companies. I have an expensive pair of Sony ear buds trashed by a software update. This affects many, many users. No response from Sony. Shimano have a serious issue with their bicycle cranks going back many years. If you live in the USA there is some redress because class action litigation in the event of injuries is hugely expensive. In Europe they will simply examine the product. Not much use if it is ok at the time of the inspection then fails later and brakes your leg.

I've had enough of these major companies releasing bad products and then doing nothing. It's time to buy from China. Of course I don't expect Chinese companies to be any better but their products are just as good as major western brands whilst being 50% cheaper. So might as well save some money.

  • My VENU 2 was fine, loved the battery life, and then recently, the battery started RAPIDLY draining without any changes to watch settings. Contacted Garmin, they sent me a refurbished watch with NEW battery, same rapid drain issue. They are yet again offering to replace battery, when the battery is new. GIG IS UP, but they won't fess up the root cause of the issue.

Torn between dumping it and getting new...but to not even get 2 yrs on a watch that looks pristine new???

  • So you got nothing out of Garmin for root cause?

  • If you buy a new Garmin watch that is what they want. The only way to show Garmin that they cannot keep shipping poor products is to stop buying. I'm now using my 25 year old Seiko which still works perfectly. Ok it's not a smart watch but so what. The Venu 2 was never that accurate and really was of little real value.
