Vo2 max

Hi

After being told by the Doctor before Xmas that I must start losing weight and getting fitter, I bought myself a bike complete with a Edge 830 and a Venu 2. 6 weeks into my regime of cycling and walking on a very regular basis and eating much more healthily, my weight has dropped by 15kgs. I certainly feel fitter and my stats are showing it as well. There is one stat however that is confusing me - VO2 max. When I first started exercising first week in Jan my VO2 was 32 (which is in the bottom 20% for a 57 yr old male according to Garmin) and my fitness age was 62. My fitness age is now 56.5 but my VO2 max has dropped to 31. If I am getting fitter and have lost 15kg so far, shouldn't my VO2 get higher not lower?

I use the Edge to record my cycling rides and the watch for walking.

Grateful for any advice

Thanks

  • Hi Andrew,

First of all congratulations for the effort and the results you are getting, keep it up! On the other hand, if I'm not mistaken, to be able to correctly measure VO2 on a bicycle you need to have a power meter, otherwise you can only measure it in running activities, it is possible that for this reason the data you are obtaining is not consistent.

  • Venu 2 also measures Vo2max while walking, but these results are quite inaccurate then. If you want to increase the accuracy of the measurement, you should do several runs (minimum 15 minutes) a few days apart.
