Venu 2 reporting wrong speed in paddle sports

When canoeing I choose either the SUP, rowing or use the Canoe Pro app (doesn’t matter which). While all other metrics are reported accurately (in particular pace) my speed is either shown as 0 or 0.1. I reset my watch to see it that would fix it but no go. My speed is reported correctly when walking/running and when cycling. Ideas? I’m on the latest firmware 10.18.

I’ve also tried changing gps to gps only and gps with glonass to no avail.

Confirmed yesterday when I went for a run that (a) speed was being reported accurately in the Run activity (speeds around 10km/hr) and (b) speed was being reported incorrectly in the Stand Up Paddling activity (conducted as a test on land - highest speed of 0.1 km/hr). Pace accurate in both, however. Thoughts?
