Fitness Age Calculation and Vigorous Intensity Minutes Requirement

When I got the watch, the fitness age profile showed me that I should do high intensity exercise 3 times a week for 30 minutes to improve the age. I go running 3 times a week for about 50 minutes, I also dance ballet 3 times a week for one and a half hours. Since my bmi and resting heart rate also match, the reading quickly went up from 0.7 times on average to 3 times and the fitness age dropped.

Then I had to take a break for a week due to illness, from then on the reading went steadily down, although I had already started training again after a week. In the meantime, I have reached 0.5 times per week, i.e. no more high-intensity activities are saved in the fitness age. But everything else is saved, including the intensity minutes per week. The problem only exists with the fitness age. What could be the reason for this?

Thank you for your help

  • Same problem for me.  I counted 16 vigorous activities in the last 4 weeks.  Watch says .7 was my 4 week average.  Huh?  It should have been 4 per week average, not .7.  All activities were well over 70% of max hear rate.

  • Hello all:

I have noticed a couple threads that seem to mention that users feel that activities with a similar heart rate level of just generally similar activities are now awarding fewer vigorous activity minutes in the last 1-2 months.  I’d like to get some more information on what you’re seeing please.

So that I may assist you further, please reply with the following:

    1. May we, if necessary, have permission to email you?
    2. May we, if necessary, have permission to view/access your Garmin Connect account?
    3. In what country do you live?
    4. Please provide screenshots supporting a before and after of more vigorous minutes being awarded previously and fewer vigorous minutes being awarded recently.

    4. Do not know where to show screenshots, my vigorous minutes per week have always been above 75 minutes as they are at the moment also. Now it shows vigorous days 0 but I know for a fact when doing cardio in gym for 15-20 minutes then I've been in vigorous zone that time. For example most of the bikes in my gym have heart rate monitors that verify my heart rate but the watch sometimes (as I wrote on another thread that redirected me here) for few seconds go from HR 150 to 90 then few seconds later back up to 140-150. As I understand with this new update you have to have 5 minutes continuous vigorous activity to get vigorous days. This should be changed as the watches have too many errors and as I can see with my training I now have 0 vigorous days.

  • because you have a vivoactive 4s and not a Venu 2, your watch does not support "Improved Fitness Age".  See FAQ below for more on this feature:
