Garmin calorie calculation needs work

While not a issue with the watch per se.  Garmin have changed the way they calculate calorie burn.

Below is a shot from MyFitnessPal, it’s very clear here that there is something very odd with Garmins calculations

My daily calories are 1950, this is the calories my body needs plus a small amount for sedentary chores and movement.  BMR is around 1700, so Garmin gives 250 for sedentary lifestyle.

I did a run for 324 cals and weights for 412. My watch tells me around 5500 steps for those 2 in total.

I have then done a further 9100 steps including a 2 mile non recorded walk and get a grand total of 34 extra calories Rofl

This puts my daily total burn at 2764, I eat around 3k calories a day for a month with no weight gain or loss.

I know these devices aren’t super accurate but the idea that 9100 steps equated to 36 calories is rubbish. Even if I add in the 250 sedentary calories it’s still low as 9k steps at 165lbs is around 400 calories at a conservative estimate.

  • Don’t even bother with the calories on your Garmin. You have a much better idea already with your calorie intake and monitoring your weight.

  • Pff  last 2 walks (same route, pace etc) 2..Friday was 142Kcal and today it was 85Kcal.. So not only its maybe bad formula, but you even can´t count on that it is bad in any consistent way. Was consistent before Feb and especially on vivoactvie3.

Don´t count on any help form officials here. Really unhappy with Garmin and Venu2 as of now.

  • Yep. Something is a little off.  I’m guessing that it is likely low hr measurements in  both cases.

have you contacted Garmin about the issue.  They are pretty good if you contact them via Messenger.

  • Yeah HR is lower too after v8.11 update..but it started before v8.11 and on one instance is avg HR same (or even little bit higher) as on higher calc instances but calories are still halfed. So who knows whats the real problem. Yeah,I have contacted Garmin via email.. but because I´m not from USA or Canada, they redirect it to my local support. So far no email from them. Will see..

  • I’d try comparing the calories on the walk if you start a walking activity vs just walking the 9000 steps but yeah that seems really off!!

  • I was watching it more closely today and the weird thing is that after first 1km it was 50Kcal..but after another 1.6km it was higher only by 32Kcal..seems like the first 800meters were counting normally but for some reason after that it slowed substantialy. On Friday the same route was 144Kcal so little bit lower but still in "normal" range.Even my running HR on weekend seems accurate again. They´re just acting really weird
