Venu 2 notifications not working reliably after update to 8.11 firmware

I got 8.11 firmware update this week. After that notifications aren’t anymore coming to the watch reliably. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. In the phone they popup normally. I have on course rebooted both watch and phone but no help.

How could I revert to previous firmware? The reliably notifications are a must have feature to me!

  • Same staff.. nobody cares.. 15 days i cant see what time is it anytime.. Garmin watchreally disipointed me.

  • I think everyone is in the same boat. Its a disastrous release. Makes the device almost unusable. Garmin really need to do better. Its my first Garmin. Maybe my last.

  • Ah well that explains the problems I'm having with some notifications then, Gmail notifications at least. I got the V2 yesterday with an antiquated firmware (5:xx) and then updated to 8.11 and found it much smoother. But then I started noticing that some Gmail notifications were not coming trhough whiile they were on my old FR55...Then I looked at the Notification Glance and was suprised to see old Gmail notifications...they must have arrived when I was running FW5.xx !

Were they working ok in 8.05 ? Generally reverting to an old FW will hard reset a Garmin watch though so that wouldn't really help :-(

  • Well Gmail notifications are coming through again this morning; just delayed by a minute or so.

  • I downgraded watch firmware to 5.38 and notifications are working perfectly! I found the 5.38 firmware from ZIP from this page (https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=15674) and followed the instructions provided there to revert back to 5.38.

Then the problem was that there wasn't any official way to prevent watch firmware update. I was in contact with Garmin support and they didn't provide any unofficial way either to prevent the update. Their only "solution" was not to connect watch to the mobile phone via BT!

But I found a way to prevent the update and it's really simple! Just fill the watch's internal memory with any files so that the free space is less than the size for the firmware! Then there isn't any space for the watch to download the firmware...

This whole bug is really amazing from company like Garmin. Basic functionality, it gets broken with a firmware update and the only solution they will provide to you is not to connect your SMART watch to anything...!

  • Interesting, still downgrading must have done a Factory Reset ?

Also the scrolling in 5.38 is pretty stuttery in my experience.

Since Gmail notifications seem to be working again I'll stick with 811 ;-)

  • Yes, downgrading to earlier firmware will reset the watch.

  • So Gmail notifications are gone again for me after coming back temporarily (and delayed) yesterday, strange...

  • Same issue.  Used to work before, and a couple of days ago my watch got updated to version 8.14 (APAC Venu2, I guess it is very similar if not the same as 8.11 worldwide), and since then notifications started having issues.

    Phone OS:  Android

Symptom:  From observations (with an app that can be triggered to show a new notification whenever I want), for any given app, it would show its first notification properly (first meaning the first notification for the app after powering on the Venu2), then any subsequent notifications for that same app will NOT be shown, for a certain period of time.  If there is no more notifications for that same app for maybe 30 minutes or so (not sure how long actually), then the Venu2 will come out of it's "quiet period" as far as notifications for that particular app.  Then the issue resets itself, until another notification comes along for that app, and another "quiet period"...

Ask:  New firmware has introduced a new bug !  Please fix asap... !!!  I'd rather have my old firmware back actually for the time being.

  • Good détective work !

Garmin must be well aware of the issue by now but as usual are taking their time to acknowledge it and fix it and make their customers happy. Hopefully it won't be too much longer now for a fix!
