I returned Venu 2 - here is why...

Hello everyone

I was a proud owner of an F5X+ for a couple of years, but then I decided to change it for a better screen smartwatch and I chose Honor GS PRO.

It was a fantastic smartwatch, beautiful AMOLED screen, 14 days battery (8 days with AOD), ALL the training stats: Training Effect, Recovery, etc.
However, the lack of SUPPORT AND UPDATES after Honor separated from Huawei, no integration at all with 3rd party such MFP, Strava, or Fit, the poor design app (compared to Garmin), and the lack of a web option to track your data (compared to Garmin again) make me rethink it after 2 months.
When I saw the news about Venu 2, I was excited and decided to give it a try so I purchased one.

Nice screen, reply to notifications, sleep spO2 analysis, integration with MFP, FIT, etc, Total calorie count (not just the exercise) were nice features to have back.

But then I started to realize that the look of the watch is "cheap" plasticky for a 520$CAD watch, plus no training effect, training load, recovery, a battery that last ONLY 2 days (with all sensors, spO2 ONLY for sleeping track), NOT using the AOD... my excitement started to transform into disappointment.

I had issues with spO2, where values dropped to a low 80%! Even my F5X+ with an older sensor never ever give me lower than 90%, the battery never lasted more than 2 days with only 1 hour of exercise with GPS enabled per day, watch face selection was not good either...

It was too much for me to keep the watch. So I sent it back and I bought Huawei Watch 3 Active for 20$CAD more...

Yes, I will have to deal with the terrible app, no webpage, no integration, but at least I have the features that I want (and I think most people want).

I could accept the cheap look of the watch, the 2 days battery, and even the spO2 readings, if I have the other features (TE, TL, R, etc).

For me, The stupidity of the Garmin management to artificially remove features and continue the disappointment of their users forced me to switch to Huawei.

That is my story.

  • No smartwatch is perfect.  I tried several before picking up a Venu 2.  I am very happy with my purchase.  In fact this watch has exceeded my expectations in many ways.  One issue I wish I could fix is that I can only view one song at a time (no list to scroll or view) on my Amazon Music synced playlist (on the device.)  I think that is just how it is unless you buy, download the MP3 file and make a new playlist in WMPlayer. I agree that there are a few other things that could be improved but compared to so many other watches, this thing is incredible. The metrics are amazing- though my heart rate in the app records a lower number than what I saw when running.  I hit 155 an hour ago (High HR Alarm went off), but my app has a daily high of 143- not sure why that is unless I am reading something wrong?  Any ideas?

I think it looks nice- I have tags if I need to look fancy (I don't.)  I turn off most of the features including BT most of the time and definitely before bed so the battery has been lasting me several days...no complaints there.  I take it off for showering so I could always throw it on the charger then, but don't need to.  I hope you enjoy your new watch- I'm sure it has some nice features too...but maybe you will come back to Garmin one day!  I heard they are really investing in the Venu line so you can def. expect a lot of good updates.

It's confusing when you do an activity and it shows the high HR at say 149, but in the graph your HR exceeded 150.  What's happening is Garmin is recording the high as the level that was sustained for a certain time period.  I don't remember the actual time period.  This eliminates any unexpected HR spikes.

  • Of course, no smartwatch is perfect... whoever listening to the customer is getting you closer to the customer satisfaction which is much much better than perfection ...

  • True.  For the $ I think the Venu 2 is the best value for a Fitness Watch.  The app is a big part of it too.  Report back in 6 months which one you settled on.

Yeah, I'd be curious to know about the progress as well.

  • Hello,

i think I will returned my Venu2 too, because of too much bug and very bad quality firmware 4.67. Each morning the clock is crashing !

These days Garmin is very attentive from what I can see in addressing critical bugs like crashing, have you tried to contact their support directly? Possibly they would ask you to contact their development person to address the issue so they could re-create it.

  • Hello,

I do not have time for this and it seems that everyone with the last firmware have the issue.

I do not want to be a beta-tester at the price level...

Sure that's your right, and I'm curious whenever you plan to migrate to try some competitor like I did after my first Garmin's watch or chose a different device?

Indeed, in my opinion, testing on Garmin watches should be way more extensive than it's done these days as just recently my watch also suffered from some severe issues which were eventually resolved, but it took like 2 weeks for that.

I wish they could hire some huge testing team in addition to beta available publicly(which I think is a great thing and really make Garmin to stand out from the crowd).

  • After 2 months with Huawei Watch 3 (both models, Active and Pro) here are my findings:

Battery: AOD active, automatic bright @ 60%, heart, stress and temperature tracking ON

Active: 2 days with 1.5 hours of GPS outdoor activity, switch temp off and will last ~2.5 days

Pro: 3.5 days with ~2 hours of GPS, switch temp off then 5 days (cool) with ~ 3 hours og GPS

Active: I turned Ultra battery ON, and I was able to get almost 14 days of battery

    Pro: Almost 20 days.

Screen: Vibrant, ultrabright in sunlight, tons of watch faces,

Ecosystem: still not many apps available but increasing a constant speed (~5 per month), integrated with ALL other ecosystems using the Health Sync app (1$ for life), native integration with GFit and Adidas.

I am on version HOS 2.0.0.179, Huawei Health 11.0.10.518. it provides BASIC data & analysis, nothing compared to Garmin, EVERYTHING is through the app no web version, but for a non-athlete, regular user trying to get healthier and exercising 3 or 4 times a week (walking, biking, rowing at home, elliptical, etc). it fit the purpose.

I would like to see tons of improvement in HH app and they are working on it... but it will take time.

I am very happy with my purchase, I am keeping the PRO and I am selling the Active now that testing is complete
