I returned Venu 2 - here is why...

Hello everyone

I was a proud owner of an F5X+ for a couple of years, but then I decided to change it for a better screen smartwatch and I chose Honor GS PRO.

It was a fantastic smartwatch, beautiful AMOLED screen, 14 days battery (8 days with AOD), ALL the training stats: Training Effect, Recovery, etc.
However, the lack of SUPPORT AND UPDATES after Honor separated from Huawei, no integration at all with 3rd party such MFP, Strava, or Fit, the poor design app (compared to Garmin), and the lack of a web option to track your data (compared to Garmin again) make me rethink it after 2 months.
When I saw the news about Venu 2, I was excited and decided to give it a try so I purchased one.

Nice screen, reply to notifications, sleep spO2 analysis, integration with MFP, FIT, etc, Total calorie count (not just the exercise) were nice features to have back.

But then I started to realize that the look of the watch is "cheap" plasticky for a 520$CAD watch, plus no training effect, training load, recovery, a battery that last ONLY 2 days (with all sensors, spO2 ONLY for sleeping track), NOT using the AOD... my excitement started to transform into disappointment.

I had issues with spO2, where values dropped to a low 80%! Even my F5X+ with an older sensor never ever give me lower than 90%, the battery never lasted more than 2 days with only 1 hour of exercise with GPS enabled per day, watch face selection was not good either...

It was too much for me to keep the watch. So I sent it back and I bought Huawei Watch 3 Active for 20$CAD more...

Yes, I will have to deal with the terrible app, no webpage, no integration, but at least I have the features that I want (and I think most people want).

I could accept the cheap look of the watch, the 2 days battery, and even the spO2 readings, if I have the other features (TE, TL, R, etc).

For me, The stupidity of the Garmin management to artificially remove features and continue the disappointment of their users forced me to switch to Huawei.

That is my story.

  • They offer the same in terms of sensors such as spO2, temperature, HRM (and variability), gyro, baro, alti, etc, and the metrics such as TE, TL, Recovery, sleep, etc, almost the same.

Based on my experience with cheap Honor Bands I would think that SpO2 and HR and sleep are probably more precise with them, can't talk about rest of the metrics.

The App winner is Garmin, however, Huawei wins with LTE (no phone needed)
Give a few more months and the Harmony ecosystem will offer much more than Garmin ecosystem.

yes, Garmin Connect is the winner in here, Huawei struggle so far with its soft and integration, let's wait and see if the corporation can change it with the imposed sanctions.

I have to say that Xiaomi, Huami, and Huawei are giving the customers what they want...

As for Huami thier HR sensors behave worse than Garmin in the past during intense activities, but it seems that change now as well and newer bands work better in this regard.

  • I have to say that Garmin is still underutilizing OLED screen capabilities on Venu devices.

  • What do you mean? Huawei had Firstbeat algos for all of them tracker/smartwatch up to GT 2 PRO

Huawei Watch Science Test: GT 2 Pro Review - YouTube

They changed the algos in HW3 using their proprietary research, which is also pretty accurate, as I said, it matched pretty well with Honor GS PRO and Venu2 (Firstbeat algorithms).

  • I meant that generally I had quite good experience with Huawei devices but not as good with Vivoactive 4 which use of FirstBeat is quite limited. I came to this board because I'm considering Venu 2s for my wife. So trying to learn what issues it has from the first hand.

  • Probably Venu 2 is not the right watch for you and that's fine.

I just got mine(upgraded from Venu) and i really love it. I'm using AOD(with live heart rate/steps/body battery always visible), yesterday i did 1 hour of cycling and 25 minutes of run and i was at 65% of the battery after 24 hours. I don't have spo2 active and the accuracy of it is far from accurate if used for longer periods(like it can be during sleep) but i don't really care about it.

I wanted to upgrade from the Venu as soon as i saw the Venu 2 because everything is new(UI, sensors, etc) but for the same reason i wanted to wait a little bit....after the disappointment from Galaxy Watch 4 i just got the Venu 2 and, if something doesn't change in the next months, i'm fully satisfied.

GPS is more accurate too compared to the Venu.

  • nice try, but have you even read what I've wrote there?

Yup.  I read the whole thread.  The OP was complaining about how irritating a touchscreen is by barely touching or having their sleeve cause unintentional actions and you were the first to respond and agree.

Also, I'm a bit puzzled or maybe missed one of your messages, but can you tell why you as a happy owner of FR945 who's so totally satisfied with it looking for something in board dedicated to inferior device with AMOLED and touchscreen?

I have no idea what you're trying to say and therefore unable to answer you.

  • Yup.  I read the whole thread.  The OP was complaining about how irritating a touchscreen is by barely touching or having their sleeve cause unintentional actions and you were the first to respond and agree.

oh well, you're turning facts all over the place again, or just see what you want to see, check the thread please:

I wasn't the first to reply to OP, it was seilogramp if you look closer and if you check to whom I replied you'd see that I replied to him not to OP, and I merely confirmed that I submitted the request myself, simply because I want the watch I use to be even better, I hope it's not a crime to wish for improvements? And FYI, so far I didn't have issues with discarding activity or something, in fact I had problem with hitting a button during training a few times which ended a lap.

I have no idea what you're trying to say and therefore unable to answer you.

I'm simply wondering why a person who  is so happy with FR945 and the button control came to the product which is from the totally different category and trying to convince people who wish it to become better that they don't have a right for that and need to invest in a bigger watch with buttons instead of getting essential features in a touchscreen watch with AMOLED even if it will be priced higher. I thought you could explain your motivation.

  • I thought you could explain your motivation.

Certainly.  My wife is interested in the V2 and I'm doing my homework before we decide to purchase or not.

that they don't have a right

LOL.  When did I say anyone doesn't have a right?

    and trying to convince people

No.  I'm trying to inform people.

    and need to invest

I've told no one how they need to invest.

I understand English isn't your native language, but your choice of words needs to be worked on.

  • Wow, many emotions here....

Well, I would never compare a Huawei or any other Chinese smartwatch with a Garmin. Never. Totally different devices. You can't even really compare an Apple Watch with a Garmin either. The whole ecosystem is different.

I too think they should make a hybrid Garmin sport/lifestyle watch. One model for all maybe. No different sizes. Maybe just one 20mm 1.2 inch AMOLED display watch, fitting men AND women, with more features like training effect, recovery time etc. Maybe the most important ones. But then again, everyone has it's own thoughts of important features. Maybe some kind of FR watch or Fenix watch with amoled.

I for my part have again learned to love the MIP display. After annoyances with V2s I bought a Fenix 6s Pro for a very good price during prime day. I just love the always on display which doesn't disturb you because it is glowing. It is just there. No battery drain nothing. Don't even get me started when outside. I only keep the V2s for it's size, 18mm, and it's latest HR sensor. And because eBay has new selling rules I haven't accepted.

So my dream isn't an amoled Fenix anymore, it is a 18mm Fenix 7 or 18mm FR955 with MIP display. But both will probably not happen for a long time.

I know the AMOLED display looks so nice, it does. But always on time is really just too bright. If they at least could get the always on time display too low just a tiny bit, minimal brightness setting. But not even that they can do. And battery drain is also not really worth it.

The most important trains feature for me is a simple one they included on almost any watch, recovery time. Very helpful after intense workouts. I don't even need training effect, also it is nice too know your aerobic and anaerobic load.

And I also do agree Garmin has way too many watches and lines in their portfolio. 1 Fenix line with different styles and prices. 1 expensive all-features-incl. FR model. Maybe 1 very cheap and 1 cheap FR model with different features. 1 lifestyle amoled watch like the V2. And 1 fitness band. That would be enough. Instead of 5-10 FR, 2 lifestyle lines, many very old bands.

  • Certainly.  My wife is interested in the V2 and I'm doing my homework before we decide to purchase or not.

    Thanks, now it makes sense.

LOL.  When did I say anyone doesn't have a right?

not directly but you keep saying that people wishes of advanced watch with touchscreen aren't worthy and Garmin shouldn't care of them and just keep things like they do now.

I understand English isn't your native language, but your choice of words needs to be worked on.

Thanks for tip, I'll think about it.

Well, I would never compare a Huawei or any other Chinese smartwatch with a Garmin. Never. Totally different devices. You can't even really compare an Apple Watch with a Garmin either. The whole ecosystem is different.

True, and Garmin is leading in here so far and others trying to catch up, maybe Fitbit and Coros are the closest rivals so far.

Maybe I'm too naive but I think that most people would actually appreciate having training metrics across all devices. Or at least have them enabled once you invest into some device like Forenner or Fenix which would unlock them for Venu especialyl that it already save it in FIT files.

So my dream isn't an amoled Fenix anymore, it is a 18mm Fenix 7 or 18mm FR955 with MIP display. But both will probably not happen for a long time.

There still a chance for Fenix this year from what I get.

I for my part have again learned to love the MIP display. After annoyances with V2s I bought a Fenix 6s Pro for a very good price during prime day. I just love the always on display which doesn't disturb you because it is glowing. It is just there. No battery drain nothing.

I wonder how do you like your experience of switching from touchscreen from buttons what works better for you?

And I also do agree Garmin has way too many watches and lines in their portfolio. 1 Fenix line with different styles and prices. 1 expensive all-features-incl. FR model. Maybe 1 very cheap and 1 cheap FR model with different features. 1 lifestyle amoled watch like the V2. And 1 fitness band. That would be enough. Instead of 5-10 FR, 2 lifestyle lines, many very old bands.

That would be ideal solution, I wish Garmin could have do something like that and start to distinguish their devices not by software features but by hardware and let people to customize them to their needs.
