New venu plus 2, software and all settings updated but still wont connect to Google Assistant. My Sony Z recognises me pressing the middle button but doesn't connect.

I purchased this watch today. I have the latest connect app software and watch updates all installed and have this same issue.
I have allowed all permissions for assistant on the lock screen etc.
When I push the button on the watch, my assistant pops up on my phone but the watch fails to connect to the assistant.
I have a xaomai redmi note 11 5g

I've the same issue on SW 11.16. I've an oppo device with Google assistant - I've tried all the other troubleshooting options. Umpairing, uninstalling app, reinstalling everything with latest versions, checking phone assistant settings etc.
Both devices light up, but it completes with cannot connect assistant error on the watch?
Other posts I've seen, seem to link the error with the latest SW 11.16 update?
So I'm guessing another update is required to resolve?
