Samsung Galaxy S22 Google Assistant Issues

Hello, I'm having an issue with getting the Google assistant capabilities to work when my phone is locked. When I had Bixby set up, the watch button would trigger the assistant but would tell me i had to unlock my phone. I changed it to Google Assistant as the default, but now the assistant button doesn't do anything and just times out "connecting to voice assistant" when I my phone is locked. I have enabled using Google assistant on the lock screen and have added the watch as a trusted device, neither of which seemed to have helped. The button on the watch works fine when the phone is unlocked. Please help!

  • Agreed, already started the return process. Bummer, great watch otherwise

I JUST figured it out on my phone. Go into the Google play store, uninstall Google (it'll just uninstall updates), then it worked for me. After it connected I updated the Google app and it still works.

Let me know if it works for you!

  • Yeah that didn't do the trick, it works fine when the phone is unlocked and on, though even if I have it unlocked via smart lock location or device, it does nothing if the phone's screen is off. Glad you got it to work though!

Damnit! I'm sure you already tried:

-ask Google assistant to "open assistant settings"

    - scroll down to "Lock Screen"

    - turn on "assistant responses on lock screen"

AAAAND it stopped working the next day. Tried uninstalling all Google updates and still no joy

  • Same issue for the S21 Ultra 5G after the update to Android 13.

  • Ok so I just noticed that when I use assistant, after I give a voice command, the Venu will show a call screen to yourself. If you dismiss without closing the call, Assistant will no longer work.

You can stop the call by swiping right to left on the home screen and pressing the end call button, but this does not stop the call. and you cannot use the assistant afterwards.

Turning Bluetooth off and on stops the call and fixes issue, until you use the assistant again...

For me I've already returned the watch :-(

  • I had the same issue and what I ended up doing was making sure that all the Bixby apps on my phone were either force stopped or disabled and google assistant is now working fine. I had been in touch with Garmin support about the issue and when I finally got GA working I let the support staff know and she said she would log the "fix" so that if others contacted them with the same issue the Support staff could have another potential fix to suggest to the customer.
