Calories burned WITH and WITHOUT recorded activity

Hi all,

I searched the forums and read a lot about calories burned while in activity. My question is rather different:

When I record a walking activity (14km - 1.054 calories) it adds up in the calories dashboard. Sounds legit to me.
But, if I don't record the activity, but STILL walk the same amount of steps (around 18k steps for that same distance) there's no active calories spend. The same with MFP. It counts a recorded activity, but doesn't count steps if there isn't any recorded steps activities.

How does that work? I got the same movement, but my dashboard doesn't count non-recorded calories burned?

What do I miss in this calorie equation?

Thanks for your help!

Xander
