Sleep accuracy is worse that Venu 2 and vivoactive ? Scientific Review linked

Just received my watch, and just saw this review :

Really desapointing.

Is the sleep tracking using a buggy FW ?

Are the Epix using the same sensors / Algorithms that this Venue 2 + ?

Hope will get some Gamin love.

  • Has sleep tracking improved?

I just ordered the Venu 2 Plus and then watched the video review Disappointed

I knew Garmin sucks for sleep tracking, but this is worse than Chinese watches selling for a quarter of the price.

  • I've been living with the Venu 2 Plus for close to two weeks now and all in all, it's not much different than the first Venu.

I am not sure that Firstbeat contributes much to accuracy. It still overestimates sleep time if you linger in bed, and it still seems to miss Deep Sleep compared to my old Versa, which I wore for a few nights to compare.

Garmin really needs to focus on improving accuracy, especially for Sleep.

  • I am quite surprised at the silence on Garmen's sleep tracking. Sleep stages appear completely made up, for instance, today the only REM it shows is for the time I was awake and just laying in bed for 10 minutes before I got up. But I clearly remember a couple of dreams probably around 4-5 in the morning, as I woke up briefly at those times.

I switched from the original Vers to the Garmin Venu for the HR accuracy under load, but now pretty much every other major competitor has caught up, and Apple (and even Huawei) have caught up, with Apple consistently testing more accurate than any Garmin product available.

I bought the Venu thinking that First Beat will improve sleep accuracy, as well as other aspects of the watch. And the Venu 2+ is certainly better as a watch than the original Venu, but it falls far short of the benchmark for accuracy, which is now Apple Watch. For Sleep tracking, the Venu 2+ is just a joke, and at $400 it is a particularly bad one.

Sadly (for those of us who care) Garmin's silence on this issue seems to reflect the interest that Venu 2+ owners appear to have in it too judging by the response to the review linked above (and others).

  • Allthough i appreciate people testing and comparing devices, a six night comparison of a single person is not a representative scientific test :-). Having said that; i've been comparing the sleep data of my Venu 2 Plus (latest firmware) against my Apple Watch 8 (best watch for sleep tracking according to the reviewer) by wearing them side-by-side over the past two weeks, and the data turns out to be pretty comparable. Both devices were pretty consistent in determining when i fell asleep and woke up, and the time distribution between different phases was not massively different. It could be a result of the firmware updates that have been released since the video (which mention sleep tracking improvements in the release notes).
