Stopped sync'ing and now wont re-pair with phone

I had the Index Sleep Monitor for 3 days. The first two nights it worked well. On the third night, it started randomly buzzing every 2-3 minutes. I didn't see any notifications on the phone or in the app, and when I tried to manually sync in the app the sleep monitor it failed.

I removed the sleep monitor from Garmin Connect and bluetooth and tried to pair it again. Garmin connect recognizes the device when I set it to pairing mode (tapping 10 times), the phone asks if I want to add it in bluetooth, but then pairing immediately fails. I can remove it again from bluetooth and try again but get the same result. I also get the same result with a different phone.

Unfortunately, I didn't turn on USB access, so I can't see it with the Garmin Express app.

Thus far, Garmin support has told me I am not tapping it fast enough to get into pairing mode, although I do get the purple flashing LED and it starts to pair with the phone (but fails).

Does anyone have other ideas on how to reset this thing or connect it to a computer?

  • I can only speak from using a MacBook (M3)….

I’m not 100% but I don’t think you actually need to enable USB file access for Garmin Express, enabling it opens the ISM as a Drive on my Mac so you can access the Garmin Folder.

Firstly, it’s ridiculously temperamental and there doesn’t seem to be any logical workflow to get it connected, but I’ve found this method works best:

Open Express and connect the ISM. Wait until you get the Green Charging light, once it’s settled into the charging cycle disconnect it. You should then get a White LED and a vibration as it turns on, followed by a Purple LED. At the same time Click to add the device to Express, when you get the splash screen saying plug in the device do so as the ISM is going through its start up cycle then wait, fingers crossed it will find it.

I did a Factory Reset on mine yesterday and paired via the connect app no problem. It was already showing in Express from when I added it previously. I ‘think’ I’ve found the best way to sync once it’s added.  Press the sync button so Express starts searching for the ISM then plug it in and wait….Similar to the above….

  • Thanks,

I tried this but still can't get it to connect with express. I also can't get it into pairing mode by plugging it in an unplugging it, it only works if I do the 10 taps (I assume this is because it was previously paired, but would be interesting if re-pairing works differently on different devices). My mac does identify it as a Garmin device (in the system profiler) when connected, and the  cord works to connect my Epix, so I suspect that this is an issue with the ISM not communicating with other devices.

I'm also assuming that there is something wrong with the bluetooth connection on my device, which would explain why it stopped syncing initially, just waiting for Garmin support to make their way to that conclusion as well...
