Is it worth buying after update 3.11

Hi, after the 3.0, 310 and 3.11 updates over the last 6 months is it worth buying the S2?

Are the various readings consistent over time? i.e. if you measure yourself at teh same time each under the same conditions do you get basically the same measurments?

Do the readings change as you gain or lose fat as you would expect?

I am doubtful whether a scale can ever give an objectivel, medically acurate reading for things liek body fat or or muscle %, but mainly want the thing to be cosistent with itself and measure improvements (or not) over time.

  • After the 3.11 update AND entering three manual body fat percentage updates from other tests over several months, the algorithms seem to have stabilized. It now tracks reasonably close with my Tanita, which tracks reasonably close to more accurate tests. I don't trust the absolute values, but it seems to be stable enough to track trends (losing or gaining BF%). It is sensitive enough that values change if I measure before and after hydrating first thing in the morning (as you would expect, so be consistent when you measure).

It's now to a point where I use it as my primary daily scale and it is acceptable. I don't love it, but I no longer hate it.

For someone who hasn't bought yet, I'd think twice. Tanita is more reliable and consistent without the need to enter "correction" factors, but it doesn't automatically update into Garmin Connect. Which do you value more?

I suspect the S2 hardware sensors are the problem, and it will require an S3 redesign to truly make the scale function properly. If that happens, the S3 could be the winning combination...but who knows when that will be.

  • The Index S2 is very accurate for weight only. I personally do not pay any attention to the other metrics. So, if your main interest is body weight and the ability to easily get your weight to Garmin Connect, then it might be worth it. But for $150? As much as I am a Garmin fan boy, this is one purchase that I wish I had not made. I bought the scale immediately after its release date of October 2020. As  mentioned, who knows when the S3 will be out. Garmin does not disclose products until the actual release date.

    • Index Smart Scale - 10/27/2015
    • Index S2 Smart Scale - 10/14/2020
    • Index S3 Smart Scale - October 2025 Interrobang
  • In my opinion no it is not. Weight is ok. Rest is bad. Don't know why but probably bad hardware/sensor and firmware. And for only weight it is expensive. Buy something else. @garmin why not able to solve all problems, in this forum?

  • It's not worth buying at all - good chance to have worthless piece of glass and plastic after certain autoupdate
