Does the Index S2 learn from multiple DEXA body composition scans over time?

Hey Garmin (and other users),

I was given a package to get a half-dozen DEXA scans over the next quarter (up to once every 2 weeks). I can then do it monthly thereafter if I want to keep it up.

If I enter the body composition under the "Set Body Composition" each time I do it, will it learn over time or track those changes to help the scale become more accurate as time goes on, or does it only use the last entry for guidance?

Cheers!

  • I had the usual high body fat reading when I first started using my Index S2, so was interested to see that "Set body composition" option and decided to change my body fat to a level that was more indicative of readings I've had on other scales. First time I weighed myself on the S2 after that, nothing changed, but the time after that it had dropped me down to the new level and has been there ever since. In essence using the "set body composition" feature appears to have re-set my baseline body fat reading from mid twenties to mid teens.

  • Sure, that's the point of it — though it seems odd picking other impedance scales' values over the Index, given that there's no inherent reason for them to be more accurate.

What I'm curious about is the Garmin's behavior over time, as more DEXA readings are provided. In the best case, it seems like that would both be logged AND provide more accurate and precise information over time.

  • There are loads of posts on here questioning the accuracy of the body fat reading on the S2 when compared to other scales, all stating that the S2 reads several percent too high. In my case I've got 2 sets of scales (Omron and Tanita) reading around 15%, a chiropractor who thinks that 15% might even be a bit high, compared to an Index S2 reading over 23%. Whether there's an inherent reason for the other scales to be more accurate or not, I've gone with the balance of probability..
