Index 2 Smart Scale Isn't Tracking Skeletal Muscle Mass Properly.

Hi,

I've been using my Index 2 Smart Scale for six months. My weight is tracking nicely, I've lost 16kg in this six months. However, my skeletal muscle mass is also falling, in direct correlation to my weight loss. I've been maintaining my exercise and even started going to the gym a little, so if anything I would expect the SMM to go up.

Is there something wrong with the scales, I have the latest firmware, or are they just not really accurate at all for this sort of thing? It's not even good enough to use as a general trend as it's just misleading.

Thanks

  • Additional information. When I look at my BF% and weight then only about 50% of my weight loss has been fat. Which I know not to be the case. Are these scales just a big waste of money?

    Example calc below.

  • I am having this exact same issue. Having leaned out before and done many carb cycles throughout the years to modify my weight as desired, I'm positive this scale is highly inaccurate with regard to body fat percentage. My current body fat percentage also seems very high. I've read in past forums that moving your birthdate 20-30 years behind in connect will "fix it", but then your fitness age and other items are off.  Also hoping for a resolve.

  • this thing has been out for over a year. not sure what sort of resolve you're looking for, but it's not happening...

  • As you can see from your own graphs it's rather clear that in the Index S2 SkMM is proportional to weight (W). In my case a very good approximation is SkMM=0.42 W.

As you noted this doesn't make much sense as SkMM should go up with exercise while W should go down with exercise.

The same it's valid also for BM (Bone Mass). If you loose weight you also loose Bone Mass! and I find it nonsense.

    In my case it's BM=0.0462 W.

So I think that, unless someone from Garmin has the time and will to explain better the rationale behind BF, BM, SkMM, BodyWater and total weight calculations we should consider the Index S2 body mass decomposition totally useless.

  • wow 3 years?!? man they need to refresh this in the worst way
