Firmware 3 - Manual Body Composition Entry Gone

Back in late Jan, 2023, I received the email to manually update my Index S2, which I did successfully. The scale reported firmware 3.00. In the Connect app, I saw the new place to enter body composition values. Great.

Yesterday, I had my body composition professionally done. Incidentally, my body fat measured 15% whereas my Index S2 measures me at 23%. I'm athletic and fairly lean, so I knew the S2 has been wrong.

But now I have a problem--I no longer see where to enter my calibration numbers. There is no documentation I can find on this feature.

After asking other users, they say it's in Connect > Garmin Devices > Index S2 > User Settings. But I don't see it there. See image below.

I've clicked around pretty much everywhere, but don't see it.

I followed the manual update process on my S2 again. Before and after, it said firmware 3.00.

What am I missing?

  • Minor update--I went to connect.garmin.com on my computer (instead of mobile app). It reports a different software version than the scale!

    Copy and paste:

    Index S2

    • Software is up to date — Version 2.12
    • Synced Sunday, Feb 19 at 9:02 AM

That last sync date/time is earlier today.

Note that the version is "up to date" yet shows version 2.12. Ugh.

So I guess the question is why does Connect see a different version than my scale (even though I updated late January)?

  • Another update, scale synced again this morning but is still reporting as 2.12 on connect.garmin.com.

    Index S2
    • Software is up to date — Version 2.12
    • Synced Monday, Feb 20 at 6:01 AM
    • Serial Number: 6BH034336

I checked the scale (took one battery out, held reset, put battery back in) and it's now reporting firmware at 2.12 instead of 3.00. So even though I'm updating it to 3, it seems to be reverting back to 2.12.

As an additional note, when it's on 3.00, it's very hard to wake. When it drops back to 2.12, a gentle foot tap wakes it right up. Is it perhaps crashing with 3.00 and rolling back to the default version?

Any troubleshooting steps I can follow?

  • For anyone else with this issue, I contacted Garmin support. The solution was to completely unpair and repair the Bluetooth connection. Seems odd, but it worked. Connect finally see my scale as 3.00.

Here were the steps that worked for me:

First, Remove the Garmin Device from Garmin Connect Mobile

    1. Open the Connect Mobile app
      1. Android - Tap the 3 lines in the upper left corner
      2. iPhone - Tap More
    2. Touch Garmin Devices
    3. Touch the name of your device
    4. Touch the three dots in the top right corner
    5. Touch Remove Device
    6. Confirm you want to Remove the Device

Next, Remove the Garmin Device from your Mobile Phone’s Bluetooth Settings:

    1. Go into Settings
    2. Locate Bluetooth
    3. Locate the Garmin Device listed in your Bluetooth Settings
    4. Remove/Unpair/Forget the Garmin Device from the Phone’s Bluetooth Settings
    5. Confirm the Garmin Device is no longer listed in the Phone’s Bluetooth Settings
    6. Turn off your Phone’s Bluetooth
    7. Restart your Phone
    8. Turn Bluetooth Back On

Lastly, Pair your Garmin Device with Garmin Connect Mobile:

    1. Open Garmin Connect Mobile
      1. Android - Tap the 3 lines in the upper left corner
      2. iPhone - Tap More
    2. Go to Garmin Devices
    3. Touch Add Device
    4. Tap Browse All Compatible Devices
    5. Tap Index
    6. Tap Index S2 Smart Scale
    7. You now need to get your Index S2 Smart Scale into Pairing Mode:
      1. Press the Reset button, display will show icons of the scale, dots, and Garmin Connect as well as a Bluetooth icon
      2. From the app select Search for Device
      3. Follow onscreen instructions to pair your Index S2 Smart Scale with your mobile device
      4. After entering your Wi-Fi network settings, the scale will show the wrench and flashing Wi-Fi icon, once confirmed the scale will show a checkmark
    8. You Are Now Paired!
