Smart Scale network connections [not identifying people]

Hi,

We recently got a S2 scale, and the first weeks it worked really well. But recently it was having issues identifying people. I found similar reports where people explained that it worked on some wireless networks and not on others (e.g. okay on mifi, problem with home wifi). As such, I decided to investigate what network traffic the scale was trying to use.

https [tcp/443]
omt.garmin.com [104.16.240.98, 104.17.46.97]
connectapi.garmin.com [104.18.116.215, 104.18.117.215, 104.18.118.215, 104.18.119.215]
api.gcs.garmin.com [104.19.153.128]

http [tcp/80]
gold.garmin.com [104.19.147.86, 104.19.148.86]

udp/4123
clock.garmin.com [204.77.162.174]

dns [udp/53]

HTTPS, HTTP and DNS were already allowed on my network. After allowing udp/4123, the scale was once again able to correctly identify people.

  • Maybe more important, the scale prefers a 2.4GHz WiFi network. A combined 2.4/5GHz network seems to confuse the scale, and as a result the connection will be less reliable.
Seems like a finicky device when it comes to networking.
