Is my Index S2 bricked? Stuck on Communication with Garmin, even after reset.

My Garmin Index does not work. When I wake it up, it displays a triangle and then a screen with a scale connected to Garmin. The Bluetooth an/or a connection  spinning wheel indicator display.  This went on for hours - much longer than a firmware download or update would take.

I eventually tried reset, but this behaviour continued. Is my S2 bricked?    What should I do?  I bought it about 4-5 months ago.

  • This got solved after I called the Garmin customer support in Sweden (Thank you Alexander!).

For unknown reasons, the scale had lost both its wifi and bluetooth connection and needed resetting AND re-connecting from scratch.

I.e. if this affects you, remove the scale from the Garmin Connect app, make sure your phone or tablet Bluetooth is on, likewise your home wifi. Then re-connect (you might need to re-set first, using the button under the scale).

If anyone from Garmin reads this:  I suggest adding some text to the screen with a picture of a scale, some dots and a Garmin symbol - for example "Re-connect the Device to Garmin Connect" or something like that.  That screen is a bit misleading and looks like it is already connected, but trying to communicate with Garmin. It lead me to think that the scale was bricked due to a firmware update going wrong.

  • Thank you for the reminder. I completely forgot about this issue when my Garmin decided not to connect with WiFi this morning. Glad I read your post!

  • This happened to me today.  Only had it for two months.  Had profiles on it as well, and it lost all of those too.  The screen is misleading if the scale has been in use for some time.  If it is the first time use, it does kind of make sense.  What a mission.  I had the Index 1 scale and that kept losing it's family member profiles, or even refused to pick up.  I use Garmin products all the time, Fenix 5X especially, and all products are top quality.  I couldn't recommend this device to anyone.  @Garmin get this firmware fixed please.

  • Mine is new and just unpacked from the box. It will not connect via bluetooth to my phone app (iphone 7 newest ios). Ive tried many times and did a full reset. Still doesnt work. Suggestions?

  • You need to use your Garmin Connect app, and then go to Devices, there should be an option to add your device there.  I use Samsung, so the layout might be different.  Garmin devices do connect by Bluetooth, but by using the app.  It is not required for you to connect by Bluetooth on the phone/mobile first

  • Same issue. I’ve done the correct setup, and I’ve done all troubleshooting. Now I am waiting on an email back from Garmin. It may be a warranty issue.
