I think my scale is broken

I have the index S2 for about 5 months now, and not using it as much as I planned for. When I did use it the measurements where a little off every now and then but I did not think much off it. It was either a few 100 grams or 1-2 KG between readings right after each other. I am using it on old carpeted floor without the stands...as I kind of lost one of them. Because of limited space I keep it standing on it's side against a wall or my desk. Sometimes it tips over and falls on the ground. I know that can't be good for it...but it always seemed to be ok. The glas certainly is not broken or damaged anywhere!

Now after nearly a month I stand on it and it showed my weight as 20KG!!! Since I am 1.82cm tall that can't be healthy and it's certainly NOT correct. I have tried multiple resets and even on a hard floor but it keeps showing the weight in the 20-ish KG! Everything else seems to work fine: The screen looks fine, the glass looks fine, bluetooth paring works, wifi connection works and even uploading works! It's just that the weight measurement is WAY off!

Because I am guessing this is not a valid warranty issue I took a look inside the device. I am shocked at how crappy the soldering and wiring is in a scale in this price range! Guess we are paying more for the software and features than for the hardware itself! Aside from the cheap look noting seems broken or burned or otherwise damaged. The feet sensors are some weird metal plates but look fine I think. No broken wires or anything.

I wish there was a way to see some diagnostics of the sensors like my Vivoactive 4 has if you power on and hold the buttons. Than I would know if one of the sensors was broken maybe. Also tried fresh batteries off course but that did not help.

Anyone recognize this issue? Firmware is at 2.08 according to Garmin Connect

Thanks

I would contact Garmin, even if you think this is not a warranty issue. If they determine this is a hardware issue, my guess is they will send you new stands or a new scale, since you've only had it for 5 months.

  • The reason because I think it won't be covered by warranty is because it has fallen a few times. Not hard or really dropped offcourse, but just standing on it's side and than fall flat on the carpet floor. I doubt new stands would help with my current issue.

I did not buy it direct from garmin because they did not have it in stock strangely enough during that time I bought it. So it's from a regional large webshop but you are right, I should just contact them. They do say in my order history that I have two years of "factory waranty" but damage from falling is not covered....maybe I should not mention that ;)

It's so strange that it appears to be fully functional as it should. It wakes up from a tap of my feet, takes a measurement when I stand on it, and uploads it into my garmin account. The whole reset procedure works too with bluetooth and selecting the wifi. It's just that the weight...and therefore all other metrics are wrong!

Looks to me like it's a calibration thing or firmware bug. But then it would be a more widespread issue in that last case I guess
