Weight variance?

My routine is to step on the scales on getting up, and then again a short while later. Frequently I am seeing weight variances in the region of 2Kgs within a matter of minutes (with perhaps a cup of coffee consumed between). See chart below.

While I appreciate weight variances from day to day, I would not expect such large variances in a matter of minutes. Does anyone have any similar experiences or suggestions as to why? Does this suggest the unit may be defective?

I would add that the positioning of the scales is consistent. The same location on a hard surface every time.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • I have the exact same experience. All scales cannot be defective?

  • I have exactly the same issue. My brand new scales are typically 2kg over. Then after a couple of minutes and multiple retries they show my actual weight. I also have a set of Renpho scales which I use to check to see if the reading on the Garmin scales is out. Definitely a fault with the Garmin scales themselves. Garmin need to fix this problem.

  • Yup, same here for the past year of usage. It is unfortunate that Garmin cannot fix the issue with an update. Unless it is a manufacturing defect across all the devices, they will just not admit it.

  • Same for me. I just received this scale and it is total garbage

  • So, after a lot of searching around I now know how to ensure the scales show the correct weight. Essentially, every time you pick them up and move them they need to re-tare. You need to place them on the floor where you will weigh yourself, leave them there. Tap them to wake them, leave them to tare (set the 0 mark) then tap them again to wake them and weigh yourself. The whole process takes about 30 seconds or so. It's annoying, but they do work eventually. I guess Garmin expact these scales to simply sit on the floor in the same place constantly.

  • I'm quite late to the party. But this has been bothering me since I bought it a couple of months back.
I have another scale at home which is a non-smart one. Before I get onto that scale, index S2 shows me a weight that's about 1 - 1.5Kg more. After I get on the non smart scale and come back to index s2, it matches with non smart scale.

Does it have any electrical impedence issue?

  • How are you storing the scale in between weighing? It's possible that the scale can't account for its own weight if it is stored vertically.

See previous thread - Scale not accounting for it own weight?

  • I returned my S2 even when I weighed myself in same spot seconds apart weight variance was pounds! The S2 is seriously flawed don't know how it was released

  • Understand some users are having issues. My weights have been very consistent, so guessing there were some defective scales shipped.

As mentioned in the other thread, when tested after storing vertically, the scale was off by around 4.4 lbs or 2 kg.

    I returned my S2

Might be too late, but if you still have the scale, I'd suggest contacting Garmin Support for a possible RMA exchange.

  • Never realised this can be a problem. I stored it horizontally and then checked weight after a few hours. Now, it was correct the first time.
