Weight variance?

My routine is to step on the scales on getting up, and then again a short while later. Frequently I am seeing weight variances in the region of 2Kgs within a matter of minutes (with perhaps a cup of coffee consumed between). See chart below.

While I appreciate weight variances from day to day, I would not expect such large variances in a matter of minutes. Does anyone have any similar experiences or suggestions as to why? Does this suggest the unit may be defective?

I would add that the positioning of the scales is consistent. The same location on a hard surface every time.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • This trend is continuing, with approximately 1.5 to 2kg variance between the first reading of the morning and a second reading 2 minutes later!

  • Same for me: between 1 and 1.5 kg difference in a couple of minutes...

It would be good to know which one is the correct.

I disregard the first and keep the second, which usually gives a heavier weight.

  • exactly the same for me. Is there a way to recalibrate it maybe?

  • Same, seems like a first measure from sleep issue, you can weigh yourself, then get off, weigh again as soon as possible and its readings are 'off' - keep repeating and now it's at least consistent with the second reading.

leave it for a longer time - I assume it goes to a 'deeper sleep' and it measures inconsistenly again for the first measure...

    Not acceptable.

  • Recently I use a different method:

I switch it on, step on it and descend before it completes the weight readings, then switch it on again and complete the weighting.

This way the following readings are the same.

I do not know if it is correct, but at least it is consistent.

  • I seem to have now established what appears to be a more reliable way of recording.

First, I tap the scale to wake it up and get the 0Kg display. I let the scale turn off without stepping onto it and recording any weight. Then I wake it up again to step on and record my weight.

This seems to give a more accurate weight in line with my expectations.

  • I do the same, but stepping on it.

I'll try without for a period of time in order to see if there are differences.

  • I've noticed that the scale seems to be very (over) sensitive to how I stand. So if I stand and peer down at the display then I get different readings. If I get on and look straight ahead each time then seem to get the same result each time.

  • When you measure your weight several times in a row, the values should be identical, at most a variation of 0.1 kg (due to round-off) is acceptable - assuming of course, that your actual weight did not change due to e.g. eating, drinking, clothing or other things.

To me, a sudden, large change of weight in consecutive measurements indicates a faulty behaviour of the scale or unsuitable measurement conditions. A change of 2 kg would indicate problems with the automatic zero offset of the scale (the Index S2 weights exactly 2 kg).

If I were in your place, I would contact Garmin support to clarify the issue.

  • I think the unit may be defective.
