Truly honest advice need regarding smart scales

Hi,

I'm new in this "section" of Garmin and really needing to loose weight but i need a reliable scale to track my progress.

Well, i'm trying to decide between the Index S2 and a model from Whitings.

My first thought was the Garmin solution due to the history the brand has with Sports and fitness solutions.

Besides the reviews i saw about the models from both brands not being very reliable (at least in some "features") i think that, unfortunately, the one from Garmin was the the one with worse reviews regarding that (even comparing to the 1st model) and the huge delay on updates.

Other thing i read was that it doesn't show if the muscle mass is normal for our age and gender, and how close it is to the boundaries. This seems a huge mistake from Garmin.

Also, with what I've been seeing Garmin doing with (off-topic) the Zumo XT (the retirement of existing and useful features on the older model and app, the bad and late updates), makes me even more reluctant.

In Portugal the models from both brands are available, and the one from Withings would be (from the cost perspective) the best choice because i have 50€ of discount but, even with all that i mentioned, i'm still unsure.

(Sorry Garmin but it's very much your fault due to the situation with the XT and Drive app for Android).

I know that asking for it on a Garmin forum, the chances of having customers saying that the Index S2 is better, is big, but i'm hoping to have honest feedbacks.

I really need something that gives me reliable readings/results, something that i'm unsure that i'm getting with my iHealth S6 Core.

Thanks to all

Best regards

  • Withings is a much better scale in my opinion. I had a Garmin Index years ago and got rid of it almost right away. And you can see all the other complaints about it here that go unaddressed by Garmin.

The only downside to my Withings Body+ is that it doesn’t sync data to Garmin Connect (if you have a Garmin watch as well).

  • Wow

I must admit that i wasn't with many hopes regarding truly honest opinions but i already saw that you are direct, that you say what you really think.

It was (almost*) exactly the kind of person i was hoping to find.

Regarding unaddressed complaints, the same happens with the Zumo XT (motorcycle navigator).

It was a tough year but i really can't understand what it's happening with Garmin.

Did they paid the 10M due to the ransom ware attack last year? From the mess they have been doing with the XT and, for what i see, with their smart scale, i start to think that they sent away the good employees and went to get "green ones" without the proper experience.

Regarding a Garmin Watch, no, i don't have (at least till now and i don't think i'll had on a near future) but if i buy one, well, i can use both products, just need to apps and compare the results of each one. It's not the best option but it's also not the end of the world.

(*almost because i was expecting opinions from who has the S2 model since it's newer and can be a little better/reliable than the Garmin's 1st model).

    Thanks for your opinion

  • Regarding unaddressed complaints

Unfortunately there are certain sub-forums that don't get much attention from Garmin staff. Apparently this is one of them. In this case, I recommend contacting Garmin support directly. In my experience they've been very responsive, cordial, and helpful. I suggest calling or using the chat feature for the quickest response. - Garmin Support

  • Hi,

    Sorry for the late reply.

I appreciate your time and help but of course that Garmin will advise to buy their smart scale and probably do promises regarding complaints from other users that have the scale and that they will fix it on the next updates...

That's why i ask to customers/users from the Index S2 because there's no better feedback than the one from who uses the scale.

    Thanks

    Best regards

  • I was responding to the comment about unaddressed complaints. Just giving advice on how best to contact Garmin.

And you can see all the other complaints about it here that go unaddressed by Garmin.

Personally, I have an Index S2. For my purposes, it works great.

  • Yes, and i really appreciate your help/opinion but for my experience in this last year with a Zumo XT, Garmin hasn't been too helpful.

That situation + the feedbacks i already saw here, on other websites and some YouTube reviews, makes me being with doubts regarding going with the Index S2 instead of the Withings Body +.

    Thanks

  • I've had both the withings and now the Index S2. I bought the Index S2 as soon as it came out, so I've been using it daily for 7 months. Of course the Garmin scale syncs to my Garmin account flawlessly. I've not had any issues with the software or hardware. Although, seems like the build quality on the withings is better. However, I purchased the withings nearly 10 years ago. I'm not sure how it would compare to their current product. I think they only had one model back then. It's heavier, wider, and seems more solid.

If being in the Garmin ecosystem is important, then I'd go with the Garmin. If not, withings should be good as well. Just don't expect your data from the scale to be easily imported into your Garmin Connect account.

If your concern is regarding customer support, then I'm not sure if the forum is the best way to get an unbiased opinion. A lot of people come here because they're having issues. so the data sample is heavily skewed. I suppose you could check out the withings forums as well to see what issues people are having - Topics – Withings | Support
