Index S2 Smart Scale - Software Update 2.08 now Live!

Software version 2.08 is now Live for the Index S2 Smart Scale.

Please note: The Index S2 should automatically update over Wi-Fi.  Every time the scale syncs it will check to see if there is a firmware available to download.  If there is, then there will be an overnight automatic download and installation between 1:00-4:00 a.m local time.

Change Log

- Add weather unit modification
- Various fixes

For questions or concerns regarding the update or features, please create a new thread.

  • Got new SW -  Software is up to date — Version 2.8.0.0

Still no BF% fix, same irrelevant numbers.

  • 4 days passed and still FW1.49.0.0

Of course, same issues with age and BF%

  • Can confirm body fat% still off, Index S1 reading 7.9% and S2 reading 17.9% I should be around 11%.

  • Got new SW -  Software is up to date — Version 2.8.0.0

Still no BF% fix, same irrelevant numbers.

    Same.

Body composition metrics algorithms didn't get changed in any meaningful way with this update. Still showing 21-22% bodyfat when I should be about 13%. Index 1 scale indicates 14%.

  • My scale donÄt show this update. My scale is on version 1.49 and in garmin connect "up to date". when will this update arrive on my scale?

  • I'm in the same situation. My scale is on 1.49 and Garmin connect say it's up to date... But last week Garmin connect said "there is an update for your device..."

  • Update arrived this night for me. Just keep waiting guys. Probably a stacked rollout.

  • yes. Finally me too. But it is 2.8.0 not 2.08 like the topics name

  • So I just used photoshop to overlay my last 1 year of weight data on top of my last year of bodyfat %, to hopefully help illustrate to Garmin the severity of this issue on the Index 2.

I switched from Index 1 to Index 2 in the middle of March (in case that isn't obvious from looking at this chart)

I'm somewhat skinny currently. 5'10" (178cm), 158 lb (71.6kg), which puts me at a BMI of 22. There's simply no way I'm anywhere near the 22% bodyfat that the Index S2 is reporting. It's closer to half that, around 12% or so, 13% at the most. Index 1 was always reasonably accurate at estimating my bodyfat %.

You can also see from looking at this chart, that this latest firmware update made no difference.

I do realize that people have all sorts of body compositions, and so this scale might work great for people who actually have 20-22% bodyfat, or more. But it undoubtedly is NOT working right for people with bodyfat under 20%.

My recommendation to Garmin, if they can't fix the algorithm for some reason, is to implement some sort of "calibration" function. For example, maybe we can enter a known bodyfat % on a certain date, and thereafter the Index 2 can scale the reported bodyfat % accordingly. So if I do, for example, a 7-point bodyfat calipers test on myself, then I can enter my bodyfat into Garmin Connect, and then after that all my future bodyfat % readings on the scale could be offset accordingly, and therefore much more accurate (not only for myself, but for EVERYONE with every body type.)

  • Update received. First test this morning comparing Tanita and S2.

    Same issues with the BF%.

If I change my real age to my fitness age(given by Garmin) the BF% is only 0.2% different from Tanita; pretty closed.

So... I hope anyone from Garmin could take all the tests, we, the consumers are doing and posting here and fix the problem with Index S2.

It seems that if the algorithm takes into account the fitness age instead the age the results could be better. Anyway I don't know why an expensive scale should produce results based on average population statistics instead of using the sensors(impedance, etc...) it has to have built in.
