I used to have to kick it to wake it up. All of the sudden it seems I can just step on it, which is cool, but does this mess up the zero calibration?

Nevermind, I take back what I said. The sensitivity seems to have change, but the scale still requires I nudge it first. I must have gotten lucky a few times when I just stepped on. It would however be nice if that's all we had to do...
The original Index (Index 1) didn't have to be woken up, for some reason they added that functionality for Index 2. Maybe, like you said, it's required for the scale to accurately "zero" itself (and possibly it was added to Index 2, because they identified that as being an issue with Index 1?)
Although I have an Index 1, and have no had issues with inaccurate weight readings, so I dunno.
You say "functionality". I say "pain in the ass". I would much rather just step on it once.
