Varia Rearview Radar Modes?

Has anyone worked out what the different modes in settings do? There's Auto, Day & Night but all the instructions seem to say is that "you can choose which mode to use" without actually explaining what the difference is!
  • Garmin's manuals are notoriously sparse.

I was wondering whether it might not refer to front light functionality

I have no knowledgable answer (my varia tail light is in shipment - for eventual pairing with my 810). However, I would think it is in reference to how the head unit reacts to a vehicle alert. It would make sense to turn on the backlight during night time when a vehicle is detected. If Night mode is selected, then the backlight always comes on. If Day, then it never comes on. And, Auto would turn on the backlight based upon the sunrise/sunset tables for your GPS location.

Then again, I could be completely off base.

You're a braver man (or woman) than me, I'm waiting to finally see the 810 firmware update before I order.

You're completely off base I'm afraid ;) I'm not quite sure if when you say "backlight" you mean the red light on the back of the bike, or the backlit display on the head unit. However, it doesn't do either of these :D

Rather than any Varia lights being listed as separate sensors in the sensor pool, they seem to be grouped under one single sensor called "Varia" which is in fact your whole lighting network of any Varia lights on your bike, the settings for each individual light are then in a submenu under this "Varia" sensor. It would seem that the Day/Night/Auto setting actually applies at the "Varia" top level (i.e. the whole lighting setup) rather than the setting for the individual light, so I guess that in fact it doesn't actually make any difference to the Varia Rearview Radar light (which is on all the time), but will only apply to the standard Varia front and rear light and is effectively an on/off/auto switch for them. That still doesn't really explain why it's mentioned in the manual for the radar light, but it's my best guess right now
  • If you set the "Configuration" to individual you can then control the radar unit light settings.

Set "Configuration" to individual. Then go to "Light Network" and select the radar unit, then select light mode
    • Overdrive - 2 LEDS on all the time
    • Flash - 4 flashing LEDS
    • Off - LEDs off, but radar on
