Varia RCT715 : Does it allow auto on/off with the Ride Start / Stop from a compatible device?

The battery life for the RCT715 is only a few hours. I want to make sure it does not keep recording (and drain battery) when I am not on an active ride. Manually doing this cumbersome; and I might forget. So I was hoping whether it can go to Standby mode when there is no active ride.

  • Linking the recording/light activity is an option on the Edge units under light networks to start when the timer is started

  • Thanks! How about camera recording?

  • I've been doing it like this for as long as I remember (and I bought my RCT715 the day it came on the market). I have the camera set to record on radar activity. When I start recording a ride on my Garmin the RCT715 starts (light, radar and camera). When I stop and save my ride the RCT715 stops and goes back to standby, waiting until I start my next ride.

My Varia Vue works similarly. The one difference is I have it set to record video continuously, so it starts recording when I power my Garmin on and doesn't stop until I power my Garmin off. The headlight, however starts and stops with recording a ride, just like the RCT715 does.

  • very useful. thanks!

I guess the trick is to set to "record on Radar Activity". Continuous recording does not start / stop automatically with rides.

Can I also ask you what kind of battery life you see in practice?

  • I have completed a century with the RCT715 in the past, i..e 7+ hrs. Mine is a few yrs older now, so I don't know if it has that kind of battery life anymore. However, last year I had no problems completing 5 hr rides (i.e. metric centuries) before it exhausted battery life in any case.

I only care about using this and the Varia Vue as safety cameras, so for the RCT715 'record on radar activity' is good enough, and I have had two incidents with motorists that gave me more than I needed for the lawyers.
