Update 3.36 reduce radar sensitivity very dangerous

After the last update to version 3.36, it often happens that the last vehicle in the column is not recognized. This is very dangerous because when you think that all the vehicles have already passed, there is still one that the varia does not see. This happens about 2-3 times per training. Previously, on the older software, there were no such situations.

  • It does the same to me with the previous software especially if there are many vehicles going in a queue. You should never trust it 100%

  • No, its not that's case. I have never false positive errors on varia before - on latest software. On 3.36 is very often.

  • Hi , thanks for your post.
May I reach out to you via your account email to collect a few more details and examples of what you're experiencing?

The only change in this recent update was a customization option (enabled in the Varia App) allowing to disable tail light flashing behavior on the detection of radar threats. I would not expect this to impact radar detection, and while Varia alerts can aid in rider awareness they are no replacement for cyclist attentiveness and checking over your shoulder.

You may consider testing performance with an Edge device vs. Varia App or vice versa, and if you can provide more details or examples/screenshots that could be helpful for all.

  • yes, I agree to be contacted via email. I am only describing my experiences. Before the 3.36 update I never had false negative messages. Now it happens 3 times per ride (2 hours)

  • This happened to me today too (the last car in the line was not registered by Varia). I have an edge 530+Varia 515 with firmware 3.36.

  • I've had a couple of false negatives recently too, on a 100 mile ride, maybe 3 total that ride. Very occasionally previous to the point I didn't really notice it, perhaps because the last car in the queue may have been tailgating so the device didn't see it as a distinct vehicle - presumable there must be a noticeable gap otherwise it may think it's a bus/lorry.

My device was running 3.34 at that point though, so it's definitely not new behaviour from 3.36 from my perspective.

  • I had the same behaviour, intermittently, with the previous 3.34 software on my device. In my observations it was usually because the last vehicle in the queue was driving fairly close to the car in front of it, to the point of being considered tailgating. Perhaps the device needs a certain gap between vehicles in a queue of traffic for it to detect it as a separate vehicle, otherwise it may be seeing it as a single vehicle (e.g. a bus/lorry).

  • I am having the same issue, but less frequently. This must be fixed. It didn't happen before!

  • Update. I’ve now had 3.36 on my varia now for a couple of weeks and done a few longer 70+ mile rides and I’ve had false negatives a couple of times on each of those rides .. together with a dozen or so “radar error” and similar quantity of radar disconnected. The false negatives are a problem though … got spooked by an electric vehicle approaching from behind just before I turned right to take a junction … always shoulder check especially now as I no longer trust the Varia to have my back.

im using a wahoo ELEMNT bolt with latest version as the head unit and it and the varia were faultless until I put 3.34 update on to it. Is there any way to roll back the firmware so that I can put 3.33 back on to try and confirm if the device is starting to go faulty or rather that its buggy firmware.

I work in IT & Tech support and been a programmer for 25 years so happy to take a technical solution for rolling and try any troubleshooting here if it would help get to the bottom of it.
