Do Varia Radars power off on disconnect?

I often find my varia radar's battery depleeted / battery dies way sooner than expected from riding hours.

I use it with a FR955 as head unit in configuration: Auto mode, so it's supposed to switch on when I switch the watch into activity mode, and switch off when I switch the watch into non-activity.

When I try it that seems to work flawlessly: with activity the rear light is on and the radar works, when the watch is "off" the light switches off and the blue status LED blinking starts.

However with the unepected battery depletion I have the suspicion that it doesn't always switch off. So now for my actual question: how does the switch off happen? Is there a command being sent from the watch to the varia radar to switch into standby? If that command never reaches the radar, does the radar run until the battery depletes?

I guess I often only get into the watch's non-activity mode when going inside, and probably the watch loses connection through walls.

my 515 always goes into this mode when I stop recording and power off my Edge1040.

The blue status LED keeps blinking all the time. But I did not observed huge or medium battery loss when in standby. In January it spent arround 2 weeks or more between two rides and did not observed issues with my battery level at all.
