Edge 830 and Varia 315 - Should the Varia wake up when the 830 comes out of sleep?

I have just bought the Varia 315 to go with my Edge 830. I have yet to try the Varia (tomorrow I hope).

The stated battery life of the 315 of 7 hours seems a bit skimpy, especially if in the real world it doesn't make it to 7 hours. As I often stop for periods of time on a trip I would like to be able to put it to sleep/standby. Testing this at home, if I sleep the 830, the Varia also sleeps. However, when I wake the 830, the Varia stays asleep and the 830 cannot connect to it without me pressing the button on the Varia. Is this correct? Is there any way to have the Varia wake up when the 830 is woken up?

  • I don't think that's possible (unlike the 515), I always have to switch my 315 back on manually. Battery wise I'd reckon probably 5-6 hours max dependent on traffic volume.

  • Thanks. How do I see the battery level? On the 830 the level just says good and I can't seem to connect to it from the app on my phone. Should that be possible?

  • The level is reported as a status

    New -> Good -> OK -> Low -> Critical

  • You should be able to see the the battery status on the varia app on your phone, top left corner (android)

    There is also a datafield in Connect IQ - "varia battery app" which shows battery status by bars and colour.

  • I have never turned off my 515 (or older 510). When I start activity it automatically wakes up and does what it should do.

  • The RTL515 is paired as part of a light network so it is controlled by the Edge in terms of switching it on and off. The 315 has no light and is not part of light network so cannot be automatically switched on and off by the Edge.

  • The 315 needs to be manually powered on to connect to my 830 but it does power off automatically when the 830 powers off. I never use Sleep mode on the 830 but on the one occasion when my 830 automatically went to sleep while waiting for a race start the 315 did not regain connection when the Edge woke up. It had powered off.

  • Thanks for the replies everyone. This is a bit disappointing, had I known it did not switch back on when the 830 came back on I think I would have got the 515 instead. I did know about the battery life beforehand (which I am already regretting a bit) but not the lack of wake from sleep. I liked the 315 as it is neater looking and I already have lights, but these reduced functions are annoying.

    However, I tried it yesterday, and it works really well. It is very useful indeed.
