rtl515 rwpgs no audible tones?

Just got a rtl515 and trying to use with rwgps. Using rwgps I paired the rtl515, and now on the screen rwgps shows the gray strip on the left. But trying it on a ride, I never heard any tones. I did not set rwgps to keep screen on, so I don't know if there was any visual indication.

I also have it paired to a garmin 245 watch, which gave a buzz everytime a vehicle approached. So I know the rtl515 was working.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Is the volume turned up? My Varia works well with RWGPS on my iphone but I can't hear the tones unless the phone volume is turned up via the buttons.

Thanks. I do have volume up all the way. I'm wondering if it's related to not setting the screen to stay on, hopefully not.

I blank the screen on my iPhone and still get RWGPS Varia tones OK for miles and hours on end.
RWGPS does have an option to turn Varia tones on or off in settings.
