Edge modes for the RTL510 - what do they do??

Hi

I have just upgraded my Edge 520 Plus to an Edge 820 to gain the functionality supposedly offered by having an ambient light sensor.

I have paired my Varia RTL510 as a light and radar and set about checking it out yesterday day and night. So far I have discovered that:

1. Individual works okay, I can select "Low", "Day Flash" or "Night Pulse" for the Varia on the Edge;
2. "Auto", "High Visibility" and "Trail" do not seem to do anything, the Varia goes into Day Flash and stays in that mode day or night, dark or light;
3. The Di2 Shifters can cycle between "Day Flash" and "Low" on the Varia but skip "Night Pulse".

The RTL510 manual just says that in the three modes "Auto", "High Visibility" and "Trail" the Edge will automatically adjust the light, it doesn't say what exactly it is supposed to do. I expected it to use variations of Day Flash, Low and Night Pulse depending on the ambient light, time of day etc.

I also don't understand why the Di2 cannot select Night Pulse??

Any help appreciated.

  • That's interesting.

    I have my RTL510 paired to my Edge Explore, which has no light sensor. These work exactly the same as you describe in items 1. and 2. I think like Garmin could assume day/night baset on sunrise and sunset and control the light in auto mode.

    I've got the radar function of my RTL510 working with the Edge Explore but the EE won't find the RTL510's lighting function. Consequently I can't use the EE to control the light or, more important, show the RTL510's battery status. Does this work for you?

    I have the Light Battery and Light Mode data fields display on data screen 2. As best I can tell they are working.

    From Menu>Sensors>Lights>Network Options, I can change the Light mode (Auto, High Visibility, Trail, Individual). I'm not sure I can tell a difference in the first three options.

    If I select Individual, then from Menu>Sesors>Lights>Radar, I can select Light Mode (Low, Day Flash, Night Flash, Off). This confusing because two different list of items are labeled "Light Mode".

    To be cleear the Light Mode you set through Network Options sets Auto, High Visibility, Trail, or Individual. If you select Individual, then you can go back one level in the menu system and select Radar, which lets you select the other Light Mode of Low, Day Flash, Night Flash, or Off.

    Also, Menu>Sensors>Network Options>Light Beam Activated controls when the light turns on by Timer Start or Device Power Up.

    Thanks for confirming that you had the RTL510 lights working with your Explore. That has prompted me to try again, starting by removing the radar sensor on my EE. Then, after turning the EE off and on, I connected the RTL510 as a light, not as radar, and now it appears to work in both modes so I now have the battery status etc.

    The manual for the RTL510 states that these modes control the RTL510 light functions.

    Sounds like you have the same experience a I:

    Individual working fine for swapping between modes manually on the Edge. I also have the data fields working fine.
    The switches on my Di2 shifters cycle through Day Flash and Low but skip Night pulse for some reason.
    Auto, High Visibility and Trail all seem to just be Day Flash regardless of time of day or ambient light.

    When you connect the RTL510 as a light, does the radar work?

    Yes, as does the RTL510 going into standby when I turn off the EE.

    FYI to connect as a LIGHT you need to hold down the power the button on the Varia until the light blinks (purple I think, could be blue) to go into full pairing mode. Radar is always available.
