Varia radar RTL 510 exhausting battery life.

I am coupling the Varia RTL 510 with edge 810, but have found it exhausts the edge battery within 3 hrs from fully charged edge.
My edge lasted 8 hours without the varia.
I have the backlight continuously on because otherwise I cannot see the approaching cars in the sunshine.
Lately, I have been using a small battery pack in a top bar pouch to extend the battery on the edge for long rides.
Any suggestions to increase the battery life are appreciated.

This will be your problem. It's the backlight that's eating through the battery, not the Varia.

Are you sure it's necessary? On my Edge 520 I can see the Varia alerts very nicely in daylight.

Mine's set to beep on alert, 10% backlight and off after 15 seconds.

Works absolutely perfectly.

Thanks for yr response.
I cannot see the approaching spheres in bright sunshine under certain angles. That's why I increased the brightness.
I'll have to try the alerts. Do you activate the tones to get the alerts?

I've got device tone set to "off" but it still beeps for Varia alerts and Di2 alerts as well. (Edge 520).
