Varia RTL510 / UT800 and Edge 1030 - Light Mode Settings Query?

From the manual : -

----------------------------

Light Mode Settings

From your Edge device, select>Settings> Sensors>Lights >Network Options>Light Mode.

Auto: Automatically adjusts the light intensity and light mode based on the ambient light and time of day. This mode is recommended for commuting or road rides.

High Visibility: Sets the light intensity to flash mode or the brightest setting available.

Trail: Automatically adjusts the light intensity and light mode based on the ambient light and time of day. This mode is recommended for mountain biking.

Individual: Allows you to customize the light intensity and pattern mode for each light in your network (Light Network Settings, page 3).

----------------------------

My experience of Auto is Both RTL510 and UT800 will be on day flash in day time, when night/dark the UT800 changes to constant, but the RTL510 stays on day flash - why the inconsistency - I would expect them to be both solid/constant at night in Auto mode?Maybe this is related to the other issue reported that for most part the RTL510 is recognised in the Light Network as a Radar - but very occasionally as a Tail Light.

I would like to see an option that allows both lights to go into Night Flash mode at night time - maybe that could be a further sub option under Auto for night mode (Solid or Night Flash). Â Or alternatively High Visibility could use Day Flash in day and switch to Night Flash at night for both front and rear lights?
  • Hi Steve - I asked Garmin Support the same question as my RTL510 was doing the same thing, in auto mode it’s day flash the whole time. In my case they said that it was because the 510 is only designed to work with the Edge 1030 and not the Explore I have. Your post comfirms my suspicion that this is complete bull! The Explore recognises the 510 and even provides menus to control it. Although it doesn’t have a light sensor it does know dusk because it reverses the display at night so no reason at all for the auto feature not to work. Maybe someone from Garmin might spot this and find out the truth.
  • I have the Edge 820 which has ambient light sensor. In auto mode, the RTL510 runs in day flash mode in both day and night. I do not have a light meter so it's difficult for me to tell if the light intensity is adjusted automatically but my guess is the intensity remains the same day or night. I have just contacted Garmin customer support and they seemed to be aware of this issue.

My 520+ also stays on daylight flashing mode when on the Auto setting no matter the ambient light. Having it automatically adjust between day and night would be nice, but what setting would it adjust to at night? Would it go solid, night flash or even better a setting to choose?

Does the 520+ have an ambient light sensor? Looking at the manual for the 520 plus, I am not seeing an "automatic" setting for the screen brightness, which may mean it does not have an ambient light sensor. The Garmin customer support I chatted with told me their developers are aware of this issue and I submitted files from both the Edge 820 and Varia RTL510 for them to review.

Thanks for the question as it has helped me understand the 520+ operation. Garmin's manuals are disappointingly deficient in explaining features/operation. I thought the 520+ had an ambient light sensor as the screen did change it's color scheme as it got light. However, I have discovered it does not have a light sensor and changes based on the timing of dawn or dusk. There is no "auto" screen brightness choice on the 520+.

There is an "auto" setting choice for the RTL510 under the Light Network Settings. What it does from my somewhat limited testing is use the same dawn/dusk timing to turn the on the RTL510 in either day or night flashing depending on that timing. Auto setting does not change the rear light mode triggered by time after the light is already on. If I decide to manually change that initial mode to something else, it changes the "Light Mode" from Auto to Individual where it remains. I have to go into settings to change it back to Auto which is a pain to have to do every time I want to go back to Auto. It's still a confusing mess to me. I may just stop using Auto and go with Individual.
