False Alarms from Other Cyclists

I've noticed several others reporting this on this forum and the DC Rainmaker forum, but I'm finding that, with the Varia RTL510, I get false alarms from almost all cyclists coming from behind. I just replaced the previous Varia rear radar with the 510 and with the previous Varia I had very few, if any, false alarms from other cyclists and 99% of the time only received vehicle alarms.
This is very disconcerting when on group rides and I consider it a reason to return the unit if it can't be fixed.
I e-mailed Garmin support about this issue on 7/2 and still haven't received a response.
  • I'm experiencing the same thing. I've opened a ticket with Garmin and sent them copies of both my RTL510 & Edge 1030's file systems (minus the map data) for analysis.
  • I have not had this issue but would like the option to turn it on and off on my Edge 520 - why riding on a biking/walking trail, it would be nice to know when another cyclist is approaching me from behind so I can either get over to the right or push harder to stay ahead. :p Would need a visual (and audible if possible) differentiation for a car versus a bike though.
  • After receiving no response to my e-mails, I called Garmin 2 weeks ago and they confirmed having opened a ticket with others having the same problem. They said they would either come out with a software update or replace the units having this problem. Are others reading this having false alarms from other cyclists? If so, please contact Garmin and hopefully they will push a solution out faster than not. Thanks!
  • Unless they've changed the hardware since initial release, I don't see how replacing the units will help.

I always resist replacing hardware unless there is a clear problem. I would rather help diagnose the problem until a suspected issue is identified (hardware or software).

Best thing to do in order to avoid warnings from other cyclists is to only ride on motorways that ban cyclists.
  • I have the same issue. It started after the upgrade to firmware 3.3, this is the reason why I'd like to come back to 3.2
  • I rode this morning. I had the issue although it responded to riders inconsistently

i am am on version 3.2 and recalling reading some posts on this a couple weeks ago. One poster said they preferred it. For now I could do without. Would be nice if you could configure as you want
  • Have been using the replacement now for several weeks and still having false alarms from cyclists. Why is Garmin stalling about issuing a software/firmware update to solve this issue, given the obvious problem?
  • Spending a lot of time on cycle path I must plea for keeping this behaviour of the 510 as is. With the emerge of quiet and fast e-bikes the cycle path are becoming more and more dangerous. I am happy that my 510 tells me about each cyclist 10 km/h faster than me approaching from behind. Please Garmin, do not change this. Thank you.
  • vmojzisek, approaching cyclists from the rear, especially on cycling paths, are able to (and most do, in my experience) verbally warn (or ring a bell) to warn you of their approach. Not sure why you need radar in that case. If you're on the road/street, cars and trucks may blow their horn, but that's frowned upon in the U.S. and other European countries and they are much wider/larger and go much faster than bikes - that's why the rear radar light should detect only cars/trucks.
As I noted before, the previous version did not, for the most part detect bikes coming from the rear - that's why, when the 510 came out with a brighter rear light and longer battery life, I decided to upgrade. There was no notice by Garmin on the new model about any difference in detecting bikes. As far as I know, there were no complaints on the previous model NOT detecting bikes - why not have the same performance on the 510?
