RTL510 initital thoughts

I got my RTL510 yesterday, charged it up, and went for a ride.

This is an upgrade from an RTL500.

Here are some initial thoughts...
  • I like the new form factor a lot.
  • I like the brighter light & blink patterns.
  • It took a LONG time to pair. Not sure exactly why. The radar part would pair & connect, but the light part woudln't. Had to un-pair & re-pair a few times before it would work.
  • I like the fact that it will update it's firmware over the air using my Edge 1030.
  • When I first started riding, the radar got a false positive that took a little while to clear.
  • Once the false positive cleared, the rest of my ride went very smoothly. Picked up cars as I would expect.
  • I was riding alone, so I couldn't see if it picked up other cyclists. I'll be testing that this weekend.

I'll update this as I use the unit more.

  • You can start from edge remove the radar, then pair the RTL510 from the edge light, then both the radar and the light can be paired with the edge.
  • I also can connect my RTL510 as a light to my 1030. Tried both suggestions from tjj1664 and Chris.J.Hart and still not luck. Garmin at its best again, nothing works as is should out of the box. Or perhaps I am missing something. Any help would be appreciated.
  • For those of you who are having trouble getting the device to pair in as a light you might need to make sure the radar is in pair mode. See the instructions below from the manual.

While the VariaTm device is turned off, hold the device key for 2 seconds to enter pairing mode.

The status LED flashes purple, and the taillight turns on. The device is in pairing mode for 5 minutes or until you press the device key

  • Did what the manual stated and it did not work.

I figured it out after much messing. I paired the device as a light and radar by first going into Sensors/Add Sensor/Light/ then selecting the + sign and the putting my own private code. I just put in "1". I believe this is necessary if others in your group have the same device and it conflict with yours. I then selected the all the sensors it found and it now paired fine. I am now able to use the drop down control screen to change my light settings on the head unit .
  • Took me a while as well to pair it but I am absolutely loving the device. No false alerts and really early pickup of cars.
