UT800 firmware checking and update

I've got a UT800 front light on order and was wondering whether the firmware will be updated by Garmin Express on my Mac? I've seen the sticky post in this forum section suggesting that an Edge device, if paired with the UT800, will automatically update the firmware on the UT800.

However, I usually update firmware on my Mac using Garmin Express, which is something I currently do for my Edge 1000 and Radar light. So, will Garmin Express update the firmware on my UT800?

No it won't. You'll need a ant+ USB transmitter to be able to connect to UT800 on your Mac. If you don't want to buy one or don't have one, best to update via Edge. I recently updated by UT800 via my Edge 1030 and it worked as expected.

Indeed, this is what I discovered yesterday. Garmin Express won't recognise the UT800. So, I paired the UT800 with my Edge and, eventually, the Edge notified me that an update for the UT800 was available and the update was applied without any issues.

Not a big deal but a strange way of doing updates.

I'm wondering whether the UT800 can function as a regular front light if I don't have my Edge with me?

You both updated UT800 recently? How so? You had old firmware or is there something I don't know? Because most recent version is 11/2017 :)
And yes, you can use UT800 as a stand-alone front ligt, you can control it with several presses on the power button;

Hold for 1 sec. to turn the device on.

Hold for 2 sec. to turn the device off.

Hold to enter pairing mode

Select to change operating modes.

TazLondon, you are correct. The UT800 does not update via Express unless you have a USB ANT+ Stick. It will update via your Edge device. The UT800 can be used without the Edge just fine with button press power on and allows you to cycle through the different flash modes with a button press.

Garmin Varia UT800 stuck in blue green flashing (aka update mode). The only option is to let the power run out. Soon as I charge it reverts to this blue green flashing mode. Holding for 8 seconds does nothing. Any help here please?

I have the same issue, Garmin Varia UT800 stuck in blue green flashing. Holding for 8 seconds does nothing. Should i return the light. only had it for 3 months ?
