UT800 Battery Life

Hi guys, just putting down my realistic experience with UT800. I've had it for a while now and I usually go out for rides at around 5 in the mornings around areas that are lit by street lamps. Sun isn't out yet so no daylight.

The device itself is great and is controlled perfectly by my Edge 1030.

The box says 1.5 hours on high beam for UT800, but realistically

Low battery warning at 38 minutes
Light flickering (bright/low/bright/low) at about 60 minutes
Constant dim light with no modulation of light at about 62 minutes

Now, I don't know if this is right/wrong or the device is faulty but I"m putting it here so that anyone interested in buying this has some expectations around what you really get in the real world.

My ride usually lasts for about 90 - 100 minutes and I carry a separate power lamp for backup purposes.
  • I have found that I need to put the Garmin 1030 into Individual mode and control the light manually from the light itself. I have found that by setting the light to medium that I can actually get home :-) They need to change the 1030UT800 interface to include a medium override, having just low and high makes no sense as the light is on high most of the time because I normally ride over 25km/hr.

Beats the purpose of having a connected light...

That’s also my experience. Better avoid to have it connected, as the light will always be in the max mode when you cycle.
This light is too expensive to (mal)function in such a way. A cheap alibaba light lasts longer altough the light intensity does not vary. But neither does the ut800 when connected........

I feel that my UT800 Smart Light becomes a "Dumb" light the moment I connect it to my Edge 1030 :-)
  • Can anyone tell me if this was solved with firmware upgrades to the light?
I have the chance to buy a 2nd hand varia ut800 for 75eur, but if it has this issue, I will stay with my Xanes DL06 aliexpress light.

  • That is a good price, buy it. The light is amazing. Paired with Edge computers there are apps for it for custom setups as well.

  • 5 years later, we're still there Slight smile

These are about the numbers I'm getting with Edge 1040 and UT800
