The 3.90 for the 1030 seems to have fixed the data screen set up for me. However, I've started experiencing frequent disconnects. So while riding I will suddenly get the red Edge Disconnected screen. After a few seconds it will come back then a few minutes later the cycle repeats. I will try and ride connected with my Edge 1000 to try and determine if this is a Varia Display issue or Edge 1030 issue.
I have had the disconnect on a couple rides but not all of them also have had them before the 3.90 update. On my last ride I did have my elevation gained field zero out somewhere between 500-600 ft gained, first time I’ve seen thi happen.
I have the same problem with my Varia vision and Edge 1030, its connects, and disconnects, I never had thatproblem with my Edge 1000 and Varia vision. Hopefully Garmin will get a fix soon.
Thank you for answer, i have installed the 4.00 firmware, and the edge 1030 works better for me now, but when will the come a new firmware to Varia Vision? its not working great. When Edge go so auto sleep, Vision will not work as is should.
I bought an Edge 1030 last week. My Varia Vision and Edge 1030 would not sync. Then, after reading this string, I upgraded to the beta version. YEA! Was working. Then I accepted the Edge update to 4.00 and now the Varia Vision just constantly connects and once it appears ready to display, it power cycles itself and does the same thing all over again. I've removed the Vision (is @ V3.50) from my 1030, readded, no change. Status: $300 paperweight.
16.May: I submitted a beta report on 5/09; was able to determine the power cycling was happening due to my trying to use certain data fields... have attached my report and pictures (pictures show what I've selected on the 1030 for data fields and what shows up on the Varia Vision -- they aren't WYSIWYG); nutshell: claims of Varia Vision sync problems being fully corrected are not entirely true with 3.97 & 4.00, at least in my experience...
24.May: Upgraded to 4.00 on the 1030. Vision seems to operate identically to 3.97. Getting the Vision to sync has required TLC at times (Enable/Disable on the 1030, power cycle on the Vision -- otherwise, fields are blank/show no data... yet, radar on the side of the Vision display IS in sync.
To add to the list of sync problems -- "% Grade" is very wonky. The 1030 will display 6% and the Vision will display -2!! Also, it's become clear that the reason why "Total Ascent" will zero out on the Vision is because any total ascent number >999 can't be displayed on the Vision.
15.Jul:Every ride, problem after problem. Edge 1030 is at 5.00. Varia Vision still shows the wrong % grade and total ascent; Vision is inconsistent on properly connecting--needs Eye of Newt or other incantations, I guess; yesterday it was not in sync with my navigation page -- the 1030 would show 35 miles remaining while the Varia showed 65mi and kept doing it even after I disabled/enabled the Vision from the 1030... at the same time, Vision would show the right turn-by-turn navigation information (displayed as rows of text), though. Further flakey-ness: Vision pops up next turn, but the notice almost never clears properly, subverting telling me about the next turn I'm supposed to be taking. AND the Vision never clears the sharp curve notice -- you are forced to perform a swipe for it to go away.
Meanwhile, while connected to my Galaxy S7, EVERY single ride, the 1030 would shut itself down around the time LiveTrack would auto start (when autostart works). I think this has to do with receiving SMS text messages -- when LiveTrack starts, Strava Beacon sends me a [confirmation] text. I've since turned off SMS text ability -- I think this will stop the shut downs. As mentioned, LiveTrack autostart has been completely inconsistent -- another Eye of Newt scenario. I've taken to manually starting LiveTrack from Connect/Galaxys7 for this reason. At least manual start has been reliable. Wait! I said that without saying a chant first. Next time I go to do it, probably won't work.
One more snafu to mention: even though the 1030 will show connected to my Galaxy s7, auto upload of my ride hasn't been working; and on the day before yesterday's ride it didn't pass the ride to Strava automatically. I had to export a TCX from Connect and manually upload to Strava.
I recognize that Garmin has exploded with connected devices, so it must be the recipe for Quality Engineering chaos. However, I'd go ahead with that empathy except that the 1000 had none of these problems.
18.Jul: 1030 powered down as I was getting notice that LiveTrack had started. Vision next-turn pop-up kept showing the next turn as .9, no matter what (but for this navigation session, the notices cleared -- I also didn't have any sharp-turns on the ride, though). ALSO: Since getting the 1030, the Garmin remote control is very unreliable -- 50% of the time there's no response when buttons are pressed on the remote. Also, a complaint -- why can't Vision readouts such as speed/avg speed give decimal-place detail? Frustrating.
Had some odd behavior today with the 1030 and 4.0 firmware - I was connected and still getting stop/start notifications and Varia RADAR, but no data displayed to include temp. Disconnect and reconnect didn't fix. As soon as I opened that setting to customize the data screens, the display began working properly and displaying data from the Edge. First time I have had that happen.
